Not sure if it's my computer, but I can't see the page Doc.

Weird, I checked in with this like two days ago. I figured I'd check back when NPD got straight.

And, well, here we are.

I didn't know the colonists were pirates? Is that what they were going for? And looking again, I can see the near-blatant racism, but the fact the two white kids looked so damn goofy made me have to look again. BAD COVER, should have went with a different idea from the get-go.

Good. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed it.

I mean, the kid on the left is NOT happy with the shoot, he looks like he can't even believe that the picture is even being taken. Hell, even the kid in the middle looks like he's going to pull a Cartman and say, "Screw you guys, I'm going home!" And the kid on the right looks like he's about to cry, knowing the ribbing he's about to get.

Wow. That had to be an uncomfortable photo shoot ...

"So, who wants to be the spear chucker? How about you?"

There are plenty of places in the Outer Banks to sink a corpse, I think if I had sent a photog to shoot that, I would be less one photog.

Let's do a colonist theme ... anyone got any Errol Flynn hats? Oh, and a spear.

I went to the Outer Banks Sentinel home page, and clicked on the PDF for the entire preview section.

Apparently the players were donning clothing and playing characters from the Lost Colony, a dramatic production at Roanoke Island. The editor says in his introductory column: "The Lost Colony is a play we can all relate to as part of the county’s history, and some natives are likely descendants of those first colonists who came here."

I'm sure there was no racist intent, but it is a bit uncomfortable, awkward and unfair to the black kid that he has to play a native, while the white kids get to be swashbuckling explorers (although equally ridiculous looking). I understand what they were going for, but this is an idea that probably should have been tabled.

Yeah, there's a huge problem. The guy in the inset photo is out of costume.

I'm actually a little impressed that a weekly paper in a small town (the OBX shrinks like crazy when all us pissant Virginians leave for the fall) would be that inventive in doing a football tab cover. Of course, even if everyone there understands and appreciates the historical context, the concept should have walked the plank.

Future lede: "Just like Roanoke Colony, the Manteo defense disappeared without a trace"
