Oregon State? Wouldn't be so sure they're libs. Recently dated an OSU alum, and Corvallis is the conservative side of Oregon higher ed. Now if these people were from the more drug-crazed liberal redoubt of Eugene...I could see it.

I recently read Richard Rorty's "Achieving Our Country" and suddenly wished everyone on the left (myself included) had read it before the 2000s started. We would've solved so many headaches and kept Trump corralled inside TV screens and WWE rings.

A Korean family bought the bagel shop in my town and kept the name and still sells lox and white fish and cream cheeses. For the first year or so the bagels were terrible. Smaller than before and too soft. But in the last year or so, they have done a great job. It's better than it was and they've expanded into a pretty decent deli too, for a suburban Maryland locale. As a member of the tribe I felt no cultural appropriation by a Korean owned deli. It's was weird though seeing the family make bagels in the back. It's a pretty cool thing.

Similar experience here ... We have an italian place run by two Mexicans and they do a fantastic job. 2 o'clock in the afternoon and the place is still packed. They recently opened a second store.

Where I grew up, there was a Mexican family that bought a German Mennonite restaurant. They had a buffet where one side was broasted chicken and mashed potatoes and the other side was rice, beans and enchiladas, etc.

It was delightful.

If there's an element of political correctness that is demanding Americans should not "appropriate" the culinary practices of other cultures and countries, then perhaps McDonald's and Burger King should shut down all of its overseas franchises. After all, those countries are appropriating American fast food.

When I lived in Vancouver in the mid-2000s there was always a stink about "authentic" sushi restaurants as many were owned and operated by Koreans. The hipster/foodie crowd that quite frequently leans left politically would use this to bash the food. Not a damn bit of difference between a piece of Red Salmon and a Dynamite Roll prepared by a person from Japan vs Korea. **** all these people. Cook whatever the hell you want.

One of my favorite chain pizza joints in the city is run by dudes from the Middle East who also do Shawarma and Donair out of the shop. Had a long talk while waiting for my pizza about how hungry the dude was because he had been fasting all day. A million interactions a day like these help bridge understanding. Again, **** all these appropriation people.

The best Italian food on my side of town is run by a guy from Turkey. The only wrinkle is that he tops the garden salads with a few pieces of shredded beets. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it.

In my wonderful hometown in ghetto eastern pa, there was inexplicably a pizza place run by a Korean family. I was a kid and never asked why.
