It's unanimous. Verlander wins.

I guess the only shock would have come if it hadn't been unanimous.

Keith Law's ballot listing Gio Gonzalez, John Danks, then Justin Verlander, was lost in the mail.

Why the hell does MLB wait so long to announce their awards?

They parcel 'em out one at a time for a couple weeks to keep baseball in the news.

It's really only a week long.

Both rookies on Monday.
AL Cy on Tuesday.
Both managers Wednesday.
NL Cy on Thursday.

Then the AL and NL MVPs are on Monday and Tuesday.

They probably could have started a week earlier, but I don't have a problem spreading it out over a week.

The awards are spread around so each gets its chance to be the in the spotlight during the period between the end of the World Series and Thanksgiving. The Gold Gloves, silver sluggers, Players' Choice, etc., each had their turn in the previous weeks. (Not that anyone cares about those.)

I thought that was one very good idea Boras had, to package up a made-for-TV awards night the night before the World Series, the way they do in college football. Of course it was buried in his very bad idea of making the World Series a neutral-site affair.

Strictly from the closer perspective, I don't understand how you vote for Jose Valverde over Mariano Rivera.

The NHL does this and except for moving it from Toronto to Vegas and picking Jay Mohr to host they've done it well.

I'm assuming they voted purely on saves and save percentage. Didn't Valverde convert all of his save chances this season?

Yes on Valverde 49-for-49. ERAs were also close, 1.88 (Rivera) to 2.24 (Valverde). (that may not be Rivera's exact ERA, but it's close).

What are his chances to add the MVP?

Not a chance with Jeter battling for the award.

I think Posnanski has ballot this year, and he's written laudatory articles about Jeter in the past. So there's one potential vote for Jetes. I don't think he'll win because voters expect that he probably has a few more MVP-type seasons left in him.

Pos is voting for Paterno this year.
