As the parent of a Camp Lejeune Marine, it's hard for me to be apolitical right now.

I dunno, let's see if the adults around here can play nice.

As for the new plan, seems to me Obama is just doing exactly what he said all during the campaign that he'd do: Double down. Obama should have couched his announcement as "I'm keeping a campaign promise."

I think the plan might just work cause I have faith in our military leadership to fight a modern, tactical war there.

I was going to post something else, but since no one else has taken the bait, I'll just say good luck to Lone Star Scribe.

I hope your son remains safe, is proud of his service, and (continues to) make you proud of him.

I've got a cousin serving in the Army over there. It's what he wanted to do, so I'm not going to shake my fist at the machine about it. He's due back in March, God willing.

If there's a good reason for us to be there, then by all means, let's be there. If Osama is gettable, then we should get him.

I'm going to get my leftist credentials revoked for this, but I think he's doing what he has to do. I dunno if it's going to work. But yeah, I think we need to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
I hate the fact that we have a terrible partner in the Afghan government. I hate that so many people have died needlessly in Iraq.
But forget the whole thing and go home? No. Not an option, or at least, not a real-world option, in my opinion.

My son's best friend in high school is an Army lieutenant over there now. He seems to feel his company is doing some good in its small portion of things.
I'm sure it is. But I don't see much of a good outcome on the macroscale. The Taliban say, "you've got the watches, we've got the time." Sooner or later, we will leave. They will stay, because they live there.

I'm hearing the first adapters are complaining that their firewalls are going ape**** every time the program boots. I'll wait 'till the initial flood of patches comes in.

I'm freaking stoked about going back (other than the fact that we'll have a month-old baby when I leave). There was a lot more support for the war when I went the first time. Heading back in March, with a little more meaningful job, this time.

I hope this works and support for the war turns around.

This is the one we're supposed to be fighting.

I think that's the key. If people dig deep in their memories, there wasn't much significant opposition to the initial campaign in Afghanistan. It's the whole Iraq adventure that's been the problem. Unfortunately, having two wars at the same time stretched everyone thin and left us with a mess on our hands.

I have no idea if Obama's plan will work; I'll leave that to the people who have a military background. If Al Qaida can be ripped apart to some degree, then maybe that will be the one decent thing we were able to pull out of this whole lousy mess.

I had family serve in Iraq. My thoughts are with anyone or anyone's family serving now or heading over as part of this new plan.

Thanks, Yank. I appreciate the thought.
