If a coach ever shot straight like that, about 40 parents would make his life a living hell. Even a coach that doesn't expect to win a game has to be optimistic on the record.

And there's not a good chance that he'd tell you anything different off the record for the fear that you'd go ahead and use it, anyway.

I actually have had several coaches tell me flat out, "We're just not very good right now," during losing streaks. For football preview stories I've sometimes thrown out the, "What would be a good year?" question and gotten the coach to bite and say four or five wins (usually when it's obvious to anyone they won't be very good).
Of course, like they say, everyone is 0-0 at the start of the year and everybody has optimism until opening night.

One of my co-workers once got a baseball coach to say, on the record, "You can't win the Kentucky Derby with a bunch of mules."
I heard the coach got a good talking-to from his superiors for that.
