Saw this on Today this a.m. Interesting, to say the least.

Best line of the story, "Adios amigo." I doubt that's your usual air traffic controller verbage.

Well, that depends.

English is the standard ATC language, but if the pilot and the ATC controller are comfortable in another language, they can use that as well. And there's always some sort of "See ya" or "Good day" verbage that gets tagged on at the end.

I have kind of mixed emotions on this one. Obviously, this probably wasn't a great idea, but I think it's more a "no harm, no foul" situation. Safety is priority number one and this lacks that.

Neal Boortz was talking about this this morning. He's a pilot as well and he had little issue with it. I tend to agree with him.

I agree. Now if they let a kid perform brain surgery or something, I might object.

I can't come up with a better way to think of the children.

Guess the kid will have to find another way to learn about sniffing glue.

The kid got bored watching gladiator movies.

I'm a tad torn - clearly it doesn't look good. But it is obvious dad/mom was there feeding the lines. Not like they said, "Yo, out to grab a smoke, Johnny. Bring in JetBlue171 while I'm gone."

According to CBS noon news in NYC, the controller who turned the mic over to his kid might be fired.

I can't say he's not deserving, but I'm a compassionate person, so I just hope he didn't have the fish.

You have got to be kidding me.

The hundreds of billions we spend on safeguarding airline passsengers... and you are even halfway condoning this?

Its obscene. And reflects a cavalier attitude about airline safety.

Mom or dad - and his/her boss, should have their ass fired today.

The kid got fired? I thought he had a bright future in aviation.

Did I say I was condoning it? I'm pointing out it isn't as bad as it sounds - kid bringing in airplanes. Kid was repeating what parent told kid to say.
I'm sure controller and supervisor will get fired.

Wasn't the plane the kid was talking to on the ground?

Here is the audio if anyone wants to hear it.

I don't see the big deal on this and it sounded like the pilot knew what was going on. Some of the conversations that take place with ATC while formal, have some joking in them as the pilots and some ATC get to know each other over the years. Certain cities have controllers who have good/bad reps within the pilot community.

On another note there was an article in GQ recently about ATC in New York that was pretty insightful, the gist being the guys like what they are doing but hate who they are doing it for.

What, no "take your kid to work day" in the FAA?
Friday is take you kids to work day at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Hell, it was an adult voice on there that messed something up and said "Sorry." Kid didn't enunciate well, which would be the biggest concern.

This isn't going to end well, is it? ...

I couldn't find a picture of him jumping out of the control tower window, so I'll post this instead ...
