NIT doesn't do it for you anymore? Good news!

NEW YORK (AP) — There's going to be more March basketball.
The producer of some early season tournaments announced Wednesday it will start a 16-team postseason event that will augment the NCAA and NIT.
The College Basketball Invitational will be staged this March by The Gazelle Group, which is based in Princeton, N.J., and runs the 2K Sports College Hoop Classic that benefits Coaches vs. Cancer and the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic
...
It will be a single-elimination tournament through the first two rounds and the semifinals, all played at campus sites. The Championship Series will be a best-of-three with the higher-seeded team playing at home in the first game and, if necessary, the third.
The first round is scheduled for March 18-19. The Championship Series will be March 31, April 2 and April 4.

A best of three final? Sheesh.

And this will augment the other tournaments?

Any television executive that throws this out there must be flogged.

This make absolutely no sense. Is this sponsored by "The Biggest Loser"?

If they took the losers from the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament it MIGHT make some sense. But I doubt that they are doing that.

Just what we needed ... two out of three games between the eighth-best team from the ACC and the runner-up from the OVC ...

I didn't include the part wherein the director says they'll be jockeying with the NIT for teams, rather than taking teams that don't make the NIT. Team No. 66 has the world in its hands!

And that makes this tourney reek of fail.

What makes anybody think the NCAA is going to sanction this?

Because if it makes them even one extra cent, they'll do it. It's all set up so the games don't conflict with the tourney anyway.

No chance in hell. The NCAA owns the NIT (they bought the rights a couple of years ago).
The NCAA will squash this one within days if not hours.

And for once we can all say the NCAA got something right.

By the same token -- look at the percentage of teams in the four major sports that make the playoffs......

NFL -- 16 of 32 I believe? That's 50 percent
Major League baseball -- 8 of what, 30? about 27 percent
NHL -- 16 of 30 or so? Somewhere near 50 percent
NBA -- 16 of 32 or so? About 50 percent

WIth this additional tournament there are 113 of 335 or so teams in the postseason -- that is about 33 percent which is far less than at least three of the four major sports so it is not that far out of line.
