It's logical that ratings would climb without the Rams & Raiders. I live in NYC, and I'm stuck with the Giants (who I hate, so I don't watch), and the Jets who I like but are always bad. We get the Jets and Giants every Sunday and miss the best games. I had to watch the Jets play the Browns instead of the Colts play the Broncos. Let them leave and I can watch the best games each week, which will boost ratings. I don't go to the games in person, so to me the NFL exists only on TV.

Put a team in LA and the ratings will go down, unless the team is a dominant Super Bowl contender.

One side note should this happen (and I really hope it doesn't)--unlike the other most recent franchise moves (Colts, Cards, Browns), the helmet, which has always been one of my favorites, would have to change:

I can't imagine an NFL without the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers. It would be like moving the Dodgers or the Giants or the Braves! It's unthinkable!

Oh, so the LA stadium problem, which was spelled out for the hundredth time just two weeks ago at the owner's meeting, has been solved? Who writes this ****? There is NO NFL STADIUM IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA.

No stadium. Which part of that do people not understand? Buckweaver spelled it out before, I will do it again.


The Coliseum is not NFL-caliber. The city/county/state is not going to pay the $700 million to upgrade it. No owner is willing to.

The Rose Bowl is not NFL-caliber. There are zoning restrictions in the neighborhood.

There is no stadium in Anaheim. Nor anywhere else in So Cal. No municipality has a spare billion dollars to build a new one.

Writers, quit using Southern California in your stories as a possible destination. You look ridiculous when you do.

The 49ers should stay put or stay in the Bay Area at least. Don't come to L.A. because TV stations here might put your game on TV more and they already do that with Rams and Raiders. Ugh.

Point taken. That's why I added the "or just posturing?" to the thread title. The 'move to LA' seems like a convenient red herring anytime an NFL owner wants to increase his or her leverage for getting a new stadium funded by taxpayers.

As much as I want a team in Los Angeles, I know that it will not happen. If a team comes to LA it will be in 2010+. The LA Major is working on getting a team, but like you all said LA does not have a stadium or a location to build a new one.

Riverside was mentioned as a location, but thats not really Los Angeles. Plus if we want to watch a team lose game after game we got UCLA every Saturday and yeah the mighty Trojans of USC.

We got 2 NBA Teams
We got 2 Baseball Teams (Dodgers, Angels)
We got 1 Arena Football Team (The Avengers)
We got 2 College Football Teams
We got 2 Semi Pro Football Teams
We got 2 Womens Pro Football Teams
We got a pro football team (SD Chargers)
We got 39 Junior College Football Teams
We got 200 High School Football Games
We got the best NFL games on TV because we don't have a team.

All of that is enough football for me. SF can keep the team. Raiders and Rams need to stay in there city already. People in LA still hate them for leaving twice.

But if they come, they come.

If an NFL team announced today they were relocating to L.A., the majority of the people in Orange County and L.A County would do a collective backflip in excitement. To think otherwise is naive and stupid.

Stadium would still be an issue, obviously, but it would sell out of season tickets in no time at all.

The Rams and Raiders didn't leave because of non-support. They chased fat paychecks in Oakland and St. Louis.

With all due respect, Idaho, the majority of people in LA and OC do not care about the NFL.

If it were such a pressing issue, politicians would be out front leading the charge. The mayor of Cleveland was on the steps of City Hall the morning after the Browns left, demanding another team. The people of Cleveland paid for the stadium, of course.

I've talked to politicians in LA and OC. They talk to voters and commission polls. If the people indicated they wanted a team, the LA and OC politicians would be leading a charge. The NFL does not come up as an election issue. No one cares. One guy told me 95% of the people didn't care and, of the 5% that did, 95% wouldn't pay a dime of tax money for a stadium.

Ticket sales would be good, I'm sure. But, in the decade it has taken the NFL to realize it must pay for its own stadium, the league has turned off one generation of fans and lost the next, and all the while the estimated stadium costs have jumped from $500 million to $1 billion.

In fact, it's the SoCal politicians who are leading the charge now. Villaraigosa wants a team and has entertained the NFL in trying to secure Coliseum or Rose Bowl upgrades. But Pasadena -- as I said before -- would absolutely revolt. They do NOT want a team there. ... And the Coliseum, meanwhile, is not a viable NFL stadium.

Ides, I'm sure season tickets would sell out very quickly if a team came in to the SoCal area ... for about 3 years.

Then, when the team kept on losing and costs to attend the games kept rising, people would stop going to games. Just as they stopped going to Rams games -- Ms. Georgia did get a kitsch deal with St. Louis, but the Rams played in front of a lot of empty seats the last couple years at the Big A. Their games were being blacked out on local TV. They didn't have the support. Leigh Steinberg (the agent) was the one who led the Save the Rams movement, not the fans.

So sure, tickets would sell out for a year or two. But then, it would be same-old, same-old.

Again, point taken. It's been a few years since I lived out that way. Man, I miss SoCal, or Cal in general. I lived in Laguna Niguel and worked in San Juan Capistrano. Great place, although a lot of Orange County is not my speed.

A Cowboys-Raiders game drew 90,000-plus in 1992. People will come, if you give them something exciting to watch.
