U of San Francisco AD dies

Larry Williams. Played in the NFL, also an AD at Portland, Akron and Marquette.

USF has become a top-tier WCC men's hoops program, just below Gonzaga and St. Mary's. I've become sort of a Dons fan, because I love watching games from Memorial Gym.

Memorial Gym is a cool spot, I used to go watch games there when I wasn't studying for law school or the bar exam.

USF offered Micro Jr. an incredible financial aid package. Hastings, not so much.

With all the financial aid law schools give, why don't they just lower their tuition in the first place?

Because there’s prestige in price and because there will always be some full-paying customers.

I have three second-hand connections to the Dons.

1. Ralph Thomas played on the undefeated 1951 USF football team that told the Orange Bowl to "go to hell" because they wouldn't let their black players participate in the game. His son Mark was a friend of mine and placekicker/wideout on our high school football team.

2. My high school's first varsity basketball team drew Elk Grove in a tournament, which featured state player of the year Bill Cartwright, and got crushed. Cartwright went on to play on the 1976-77 USF team that went 29-0 before losing the regular-season finale to Notre Dame and in the NCAA to UNLV.

3. My afternoon anchor at KUIC-FM in Vacaville, Drew Sandsor, graduated from USF.

I believe USF dropped the program after the 1951 season. The money from the Orange Bowl would have financed it for longer but they never got it and the administration shut the program down.
