On July 5, 1989, a little-known pilot called "The Seinfeld Chronicles" debuted on NBC to little or no fanfare. The pilot didn't have an Elaine, and Kramer was called "Kessler."
The pilot got critical acclaim and impressed the suits enough that NBC brought Seinfeld back in 1990 for a four-episode run, then it returned for good in January 1991. By 1993, the show was a top-10 fixture, and the rest is history.
