We're up one from five years ago. Holding our breath hoping no one "expendable" leaves, though.

What gets me even more than that kind of situation is when your dept. is fully staffed, someone leaves, and you have to get permission to fill the spot -- usually because upper management wants to see if you can function with one less person and save them some money. If you lose someone, wouldn't it make sense that he/she would be replaced? After I left my last place, it took the SE a good 6 months to get approval to hire someone to replace me. Checking their Web site periodically, the strain on the two-person staff was evident (the local copy was less frequent and of poorer quality).
