What's the stupidist thing anyone's ever said to you? (Non-work version)

At my last paper we handed out little sheets to fill out for high school seniors. One question asked what their plans were for after graduation. One kid paused, looked up at me and asked: "How do you spell college?"

    Your favorite SI story ever

I started getting SI in 1990, and this was the first time I ever felt compelled to keep an issue because of a story I read. It's the Mike Coolbaugh piece from Scott Price: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1108023/index.htm

    It's Enrico Palazzo!

Good analysis Batman. My two favorite parts of that scene: When Frank Drebin is arguing with the other umpires and he notices Reggie Jackson pull out a gun. So Drebin does the same, which prompts the other umps to drop their argument: "OK, you're the boss." Help me out on this one: After Jake...

    The greatness of The Simpsons

This from the Lisa Loves Nelson episode, a highly underrated piece of work: Lisa: [reading] "Nuke the whales?" You don't really believe that, do you? Nelson: I dunno. Gotta nuke something.

    The greatness of The Simpsons

From the Monorail episode: Marge: Homer, I have someone here that can help you. Homer: Is it Batman? Marge: No, it's a scientist. Homer: Batman was a scientist. Marge: IT'S NOT BATMAN!

What was the best day of your life?

Batman, you're the coolest dude alive. On to my moment... I had coached rec basketball in college, got away from it but got back in as an assistant with a friend of mine with 13-14 y/o boys. We didn't win a game the entire regular season and went into the postseason tournament against the No...

Need advice: How do you deal with wife's affair, divorce?

I became a fan of this thread at the start because I was going through a divorce as well. My wife wasn't as rotten as yours, but let's just say I had to dig down deep to remain civil. Not, while I had similar feelings for a long time, the bad memories of my wife erased all the good. Just focus...

Wife and Kids question for all

King, you'll likely reap the benefits of spending time with her like that for a long time.

    Monorail ... D'Oh

Marge (when the monorail is out of control): Homer, I have someone here who can help you. Homer: Is it Batman? Marge: No, it's a scientist. Homer: Batman was a scientist. Marge: IT'S NOT BATMAN!

    Road Trip

It may be out of your way, but look on your Texas map for a town called Brownwood. It's south of Abilene. Smack in the middle of town is a place called Underwood's Cafeteria. The only drawback is the line may be out of the building. But it's damn good barbecue. And finish it off with the cobbler.

Then there were folks from Bogalusa who would arrive at Southeastern, get out of their car and say, "Geez, this place stinks."

JD, that wasn't on my watch. What year was it about? But based on how often the stringer I had told me they hadn't received a check, it doesn't surprise me.

    Your five favorite sports books

I read It Never Rains in Tiger Stadium in three days. The best book I own by far. I bought Eddie Robinson's autobio a few years back and loved it. Still crack it open every now and then. Sorry for the thread jack, but if you're into Louisiana history, get the new Kingfish book. Huey was as...

    Tulsa World lays off 26

I was the lone casualty in sports. As I type this 24 hours after my dismissal, no one has given me a concrete answer as to why I was chosen. Not that I wish this on anyone else, but there are people still working there who have served suspensions - some more than once. I can only assume it was...

    Thanks.

During my small-town Texas days, every time we ran this one kid's picture in the paper I had a tall jar of chocolate-covered almonds on my desk. Does that count? Or how about the time many years ago I was told to take a $20 bill for attending (bedrudingly, of course) an AARP meeting?
