Sports Journalists Forum – Media, Newsroom & Reporting Talk

Help Support Sports Journalists Forum:

I'm all for following the rules but the FIFA rules have a process for suspending a red card; they just did it for Ronaldo this year I saw and the regulation for suspension is already in the rules.

Now the application of it? Hmmm....

Come on, let's not pretend that FIFA's record has been spotless up until this situation.

Red cards are almost never suspended period, but especially in the middle of a competition. The reason is self-evident ... it ****s up the integrity of the competition and opens the door up for endless appeals over the most perceived slights.

If the US does lose tonight, I will find my silver lining in the fact that Trump once again proved he ruins everything he touches.

JFC if I try to wait until 2 pm to take lunch so I can see the first half, then why does my client rouse from slumber to demand immediate answers to multiple somethings at 1:54?

It sits queasy on the stomach for the same reason it does when the rich family splashes cash to get them onto a team or a starting lineup they might not have gotten on their own. Even if the kid truly belongs (or the original call was crap), a sense of fairness has been lost.

Root for Americans with gusto or don’t. I have no problem either way. But you don’t owe the USMNT your undying loyalty any more than you owe it to the Utah Jazz. And trying to bully people into cheering when these circumstances don’t sit right with them is just performative patriotism under a different brand name.
I'm Mormon. I have to root for the Jazz. It's in the contract.

Might be a dumb question ... is there a big cultural rivalry with Spain and Portugal?
Like, is it deep-seated hatred like England and France, or Germany and France? Or more good natured brotherly energy like U.S. vs. Canada?

At least Mexico tried a bunch of crappy crosses yesterday. What are these teams doing around the box? And they are supposed to be two of the best.

Portugal played for one goal with a target man well past his expiration date.
