Depends how old the child is. They could be back for years.

One other thing...at the airport kate asks Jack if he's been drinking again and also the two have met at "the usual " place at the airport before. It seems as though they are back for a long time.

At the end when Jack shows Kate the obituary he says to her "I thought you would go." She answers "why would I?" So it has to be someone she cares nothing about or perhaps hates and someone that is neither friend or family to Jack but he cares. Jack so desperately feels he made such a mistake...

Jack definitely said neither and was offered to view the person inside and totally refused.
