good days at the santa barbara news-press

I'm not doubting that and without siding with DP, I'd have to say the SB must have been a great place to work before this fiasco. At MOST papers everyone would have looked the other way when the F-bombs started flying. That or had some hallucinogenic version of the event.

    too picky?

There's a sense of entitlement because many larger papers ARE hiring kids straight out of college. They are cheaper. Bigger papers can also absorb an inexperienced hire easier than smaller operations. Exactly. The young lady in the original post could probably get hired at the Fort Worth...

    Just another desker

POKES posted this on the job board. Thought it might make a good discussion here. Anybody else run into this situation? Personally I've seen inside-page design and head agate monkey jobs shamelessly overhyped. Anyone been promised a supervisory role only to have it turn out to be a...

    Unrealistic expectations of the business?

That's a great attitude to have, but I think the reason people get frustrated with their journalistic lot is that the love for their job evolves over time. Most of us know you won't get rich working at newspapers. The love sustains you. But newspapers often rarely love you back. Some people...

    DMN buyouts

Keep in mind a few years back the S-T didn't cover the Stanley Cup finals, but sent a writer to the French Open. It's also possible that the sports department at the S-T is the only department that hasn't faced cuts or tightening. The other departments run a lot leaner than sports. And, covering...

    Minority sports reporters

No, papers are convinced suburban white people spend more on advertising. Or advertisers spend more on suburban white people.
