Surprised he only one two CMAs (for videos), considering how much he sold. Not even the Horizon Award. Fun trivia - who beat George Strait and Reba McEntire the year they were both nominated for the award.

gonna be weird place for this question if it’s not Toby Keith.

I was just checking out the winners of the award....anyway - it was John Anderson. Keith was never even nominated for the award after Shoulda Been a Cowboy. Only the most "spun" (its a stat) song of the 1990s. I do think its interesting that like Shania Twain (they were actually label-mates when they first launched) - Nashville didn't know how to respond to either since they both brought a little more "flair" to their music, than the establishment was used to. But Keith's songs seem quaint now compared to some of the dreck flying out of Music City.

I had the good fortune of being actively involved in the country music industry during its mid-90s boom and ran across Toby several times, both professionally and personally (thanks to having mutual drinking buddies) and I found him kinda shy, kinda awkward...much "smaller" than his fame and his frame. As for not winning awards, he was the victim of bad timing...there were a LOT of TK-types in country music at the time, from John Michael Montgomery and Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw etc etc trying to be the next Garth/Clint/George -- and his labels, [edit] A&M / Polydor, didn't exactly have any clout on the Row.

RIP cowboy.

Oh I liked Anderson - but he's not Strait or Reba. It's really weird seeing the list of nominees year by year. Who won, who didn't. Some were nominated in multiple years.
