How was this property allowed to be inhabited? If the Department of Earth and Environment knew that it was "sinking at an alarming rate" for over 20 yrs, no one thought to condemn it? Prevent inhabitants? Come on, when you come into this type of information it needs to be addressed!!

The mineral crystals formed in lime particles through pozzolanic reaction at somewhat elevated temperatures. The presence of Al-tobermorite surprised Jackson. "It's very difficult to make," she said. Synthesizing it in the laboratory requires high temperatures and results in only small quantities.

I'm just saying the university wouldn't just hold their findings in secret, it must have been shared with someone. Not blaming the university, I'm looking at those who the information/study was shared with, namely the owners (who would have had to give permission for the study).

My wife's an architect (retired), and all her friends are architects, so I'm already up to my ass in relatively informed conjecture. Nevertheless ... the consensus is that in all likelihood about a dozen-plus ridiculously unlikely events came together. Stipulating that those alarming shifts held that pace over those years, per the experts in my/her circle that alone wouldn't be close to enough; there's far too much of a fudge factor engineered into such a building.

One interesting thing I've learned is that concrete is engineered to fail before the underlying steel structure will fail. If the concrete's failing, that's a Poltergeist "Get out!" signal by design.

I have not been involved in a collapse but have been involved in numerous concrete structures. This is why there are (at least in California) numerous "special" inspections of concrete mixes, concrete formwork, rebar, concrete pours, and the concrete cores, to ensure that the concrete structure strength is as engineered. The structures are also supposed to be over-engineered to give a safety margin so as even if cracks or some failures appear, we don't have a catastrophe.

I was recently involved in the investigation of one 40 floor project where some rebar deficiency appeared halfway up; needless to say there was a great deal of engineering and inspection time (and lawyering) to get some piece of mind before continuing.

Pretty sure there’s a half-built highrise in Hollywood that’s had the same fate, hanging up its construction for years.

Mandalay Bay had a tower that was tilting and was shut down for years, IIRC.
