My apologies if you've heard this before. But animal-rights groups, to me, were defined forever by the Fred Coleman Memorial Pigeon Shoot in Hegins, Pa.
For many, many years, the coal crackers of central Pennsylvania flocked to that community every Labor Day. And yes, it was just as gruesome as it sounds. They had the schoolchildren go out into the field where the birds landed to break the necks of those who were still breathing.
Well, Fund For Animals found out about it one year in the early '80s. and descended upon the small village in waves. Half of them dumped animal blood on the Hegins exit signs on Interstate 81. Just as many went out to the field and sat in the middle, trading screams with the locals.
It was the ultimate example of two groups with absolutely no understanding of the other's reality, and even less desire to understand it. The pigeon shoot continued until 1998, when the locals reluctantly pivoted to a Labor Day community picnic.
