What's surprising about the Hoffa thing is that a mob hit is usually pretty public. Did they disappear him because there would be more pressure to investigate a Hoffa killing than your average mob hit.

Some "mysteries" get built up over time. The time leads to increased speculation that lead to theories that a more involved and elaborate to "justify" the fact that they haven't been solved. (Big conspiracy/cover-up, powerful people don't want something solved). I think some of these "cover-ups" have more to do with initial investigations covering up sloppy early police work that derail things more than anything else.

Even setting aside the fact that he never gets on the plane to begin with, they would know who D.B. Cooper was within a few hours if it happened today.

1. Zodiac most fascinates me. The cryptography, the unusual pattern and methods of killing. A second would be Jack the Ripper.

B. It's my understanding that the parents have been cleared of the JonBenet murder by people who have looked at it.

iii. 20 years ago the torso of a Swedish nanny was found in a dumpster in Boston and there has never been any good leads.

4. The Boston Strangler is solved, but there are theories DeSalvo didn't commit all the murders.

Bill James wrote a true crime book in which he looked at a bunch of murders, solved and unsolved, and gave his opinion on what happened. I would suggest getting it from the library and browsing through it, reading what you are interested in.

It's hard to put this under "favorite" ... but for people in their mid-40s or above, Adam Walsh's murder stands out. It was the first time I can recall an abduction by a stranger being that kind of big news, it was a huge TV movie and then it launched John Walsh's show.

I didn't put a whole lot of thought into it, and police eventually pinned it on a local drifter ... but then a newspaper report came out maybe 10 years ago that Jeffrey Dahmer lived in south Florida at the time, had access to a van that looked like the one police spent years looking for, and two witnesses said he was near the mall that day. Police asked him about it but he said no, so they ended it there under the rationale that he was telling him about all the other killings so why wouldn't he have copped to that one, but there isn't a whole lot of good evidence connecting the guy they did eventually decide on.

The one I'd most like to know the entire truth about is probably the JFK assassination. I'm open to a lone gunman, inside job, Soviets, the mob, all of it. I don't care what actually happened. I'd just like to know.

Solved? Nope. A mentally ill, homeless, undocumented alien was found guilty of her murder...but eventually justice was served and he was freed, after having been found to be railroaded. Her real killer remains free, and, IMO, it's not Gary Condit.

Don't believe Oswald did it alone, in fact not sure how much he even participated that day. Will go to my grave believing it was a very high level conspiracy, and they got away with it. The trail is too old and too may people are dead now to uncover the truth. But I would certainly like to know the truth on who--mob, government officials, anti-Castro/Cuba supporters, etc.

DB Cooper without a doubt. Been fascinated by that case since I was in elementary school. In fact, I wrote a script for a play about what I thought really happened to him for a 5th grade assignment. Wish I had saved it. It was probably better than how Without a Paddle turned out... o_O

The apartment where they were found was close to the school I was attending at the time and the woman had been a student in the undergrad program so there was a bit of a personal connection. It was such a weird murder with the staging of the scene. I remember the police believed the clock had purposely been set to a particular time as an attempt to throw off the investigation.

The part that has always bugged me was a report the couple had been seen at a local bar with an unidentified woman whose description matched a classmate (a gap in her teeth and an unusual ring, I believe). One of my closest school friends and I spent a fair amount of time discussing whether the woman could have been Mary and whether Mary could be the murderer.

One I keep coming back to is a local mystery. 19 YO pregnant girl got off work at a Pizza Hut about 11 o'clock one night in 1994 and simply vanished into thin air. Her car was found at an old back-road bridge some 20 miles away, but there has never been any trace of her to be found. For awhile it was thought a murderous family of teenagers in the area near the bridge might have killed her and buried her body deep deep in the woods, which would be a year before they made their name with a particularly vicious double murder, but there wasn't much evidence to support that theory. Google the Angela Freeman case in Mississippi. It's pretty spooky.
