Robert M. Jelenic, 58, former chairman and chief executive officer of Journal Register Co., publisher of the Trentonian, died Wednesday night in Pennsylvania after a long bout with cancer.

I'm going to respect the wishes of the mods and Lucas, obviously, but this was a public figure in our business who led an organization that by all accounts visited a lot of misery on a lot of people -- under his leadership -- so if we're not going to be able to be honest about who he was, then the other suggestion would simply be to let this thread drop quietly off the first page.

I'm sorry -- any RIP isn't going to be very heartfelt by most people, and if it's not, what's the point of posting it?

In my many years in the business, I made an enemy or two. I suspect all of us have. I don't wish death or cancer on any of them.
We've taken more than our share of shots at the man on here, most of them probably deserved.
The hours after his death are not the time to renew the hatred.
He had cancer. My RIP was quite sincere.

As usual, SF Express gets it just right. We are either in the business of telling the truth or we are not. A man's early passing does not forgive his numerous sins. Either let's be honest, or let's walk away. But let's not pretend he is anything other than what he was. If you wish a sincere RIP, Moddy, that is your right. Death is perhaps the one universal pain we all can relate to. But I think it's a bit naive to say say nice things or don't say them at all.

I will say this, belaboring the obvious a little: Every death provides a lesson or a reminder for those of us left behind. It's a lesson we probably shouldn't need but quite often do, and it particularly can come in handy when we're facing professional and economic crises like the current ones.

Spend your life wisely.

You can say (pretty much) what you want and a lot has been said about the man. My point is, don't say it here. Show a smidge of respect. No one is saying you have to say something. Say nothing, that's fine. Just don't be an asshole about a guy who just died.

I'm with those who have expressed reservations about Webby's and Moddy's decision here. As far as I'm concerned, we're being asked to show Jelenic far more respect in death than he ever showed people in life.

We're going to have to disagree on this. I've always found that to be such an incredibly bizarre sentiment: Someone died, therefore we should all be nice. At what point does someone become such a **** that they no longer deserve to have this clause enacted? Bob Jelenic is not Robert Mugabe, whose passing I'm quite certain we wouldn't told to mind our tongues at, but he is not Mother Teresa either. I'm curious as to why Bob Jelenic falls closer to Mother Teresa on this scale than he does Robert Mugabe.

There is nothing assholish about telling the truth. As a newsman, or former newsman, I would we'd all understand that and respect it.
