Yearbooks botched

McKINNEY, Texas (AP) -- School officials say they are appalled by altered photos -- including heads on different bodies -- in hundreds of McKinney High School yearbooks delivered this week.

Besides the head and body switching, some necks were stretched, one girl's arm was missing and another girl's head was placed on what appeared to be a nude body, with the chest blurred.

A spokeswoman for Minnesota-based Lifetouch National School Studios Inc. said the alterations were "an unfortunate lapse in judgment" by an employee, but she didn't believe it was malicious.

The high school had required Lifetouch to make heads the same size and eyes at the same level in all student photos, company spokeswoman Sara Thurin Rollin said Saturday.

The request was "unusual and definitely very particular, but that's not to suggest what happened here is acceptable," she said.

Rollin declined to say if the company fired or reprimanded the employee who altered the images.

She said Lifetouch is taking full responsibility for the altered pictures, about 30 in all, and will pay to have the publication reprinted before the seniors graduate.

Lori Oglesbee, the school's yearbook adviser at McKinney High School, said the yearbook staff would spend the weekend rebuilding the yearbook.

Anybody else find it really odd the school requested the heads all be the same size with eyes all at the same level?

I remember when I was in high school, hearing about another school (somewhere out of state) that had a yearbook come out that divided everyone not by class or anything like that, but by stuff like "Jocks, Preps, Freaks and Geeks."

It went over like Sergeant Slaughter's Iraqi sympathizer heel turn in '91.

Uh, perhaps because we've seen plenty of stories of the "yearbook staff kiddies **** up" variety. This time, it's either the company that prints them or the school itself that ****ed things up, not the yearbook kids.

If I shelled out whatever these kids paid for to get a yearbook, I'd expect them to be quality. I don't remember what I paid to get both yearbooks my senior year, but it sure as hell wasn't cheap for a broke ass 17-year-old kid.

Perhaps newspapers will look as awful as this yearbook did before long.

OK, I'll try to stay a bit on topic. Why is this thread even on JTO? It's not journalism. Unless I'm mistaken, it has nothing to do with journalism.

My mom taught at a junior high where they had a contest where students submitted drawings for the yearbook cover. The kid who won drew the mascot (a lion) in jeans and a jacket.

After his drawing was chosen, the school had him ink it in and send it to the printer. When he did, he drew the lion's **** coming out of the jeans. No one caught it and all of the yearbooks printed. School got quite a surprise when they opened the boxes after delivery.
