The story about Kindred finding fulfillment covering high school basketball was written pretty well three years ago.

Big time sports writer finds fulfillment covering small town team

The updated iteration from ESPN is still worth a read, though.

Would have loved to have read the piece he wrote that got him in some hot water with the parents. I mean, c'mon, you gotta **** off some parents at some point. That's why sports writers are drawn to sports.

Beautiful soul, great writer. Many young journos don't realize just how powerful a voice Kindred was at the Washington Post, because he never became a TV persona. Kornheiser and Wilbon are great in their own ways, but Kindred was the section's quiet yet towering voice -- and yet just as gentle a presence in the press box. No knock on those who moved to TV; everybody's got mouths to feed. But there are few better examples of a sportswriter understanding his lane, working it perfectly, and gracefully toiling on when the hot-take world moves on. To have him recognized now is sort of stunning. Tip of the cap to all involved.

Dave is good people and has always been a great resource. Got to know him through my late father. Read him at the Courier-Journal while in college, and with the Post when I went back to D.C.

A great writer and an even better man.

Same.

I had no idea Jon Wertheim was doing work for 60 minutes now. Is he still at SI?

Excellent segment. Touched on Dave's background, but made it mainly about his work with the high school team.

Been saying the same thing about girls' sports for years ... in part because I watched organizations discriminate against my mother during her more athletic days.

Keep up the good work, Dave.

I really enjoyed the piece. Dave has a remarkable humility for such an accomplished writer. He keeps it pretty simple. Then he writes his ass off. Heartbreaking to hear about his wife. A great man.

I understand Kindred's stature in our business and that he is an all-around great guy. I'm not knocking him at all.
But I remember seeing this story 2-3 years ago. Why is it a story again now?
I didn't watch "60 Minutes," maybe they answered that question, maybe there is something new. Don't know.
Is this going to be like the Down kids who get to score a touchdown or a basket? It is a wonderful moment for them. Let them do it. But it is not a major publicity event every time it happens.
