Who's the douchebag here?

Although I told someone here that I think kids should get second chances after demonstrably isolated indiscretions, I also think that it is perfectly reasonable not to vote for Newton this year. I'm surprised so many people are up in arms about that, like Doyel. Under the language just posted, any voter clearly is entitled to a a reasonable doubt about whether Newton has played his career with the requisite amount of "integrity," is it not?
Most people aren't Pius douchebags and are realists. Double Downs post couldn't have said it any better

If you have a Heisman vote and vote for anyone other than the best football player, your vote is fraudulent.
There is no arguing with this.

Actually, there may be some arguing with that.

Via www.heisman.com:
The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work.

The best football player might not "best exhibit the pursuit of excellence with integrity." Unless voting instructions are different, there's a little room to wiggle.

Only God should have a Heisman vote then.

And because of the nepotism thing, Tebow would win every year.

You get a vote, you vote how you want.

Hell, if people followed the Heisman guidelines to the letter, they'd actually have to pick the best football player in college.

How often does that happen?

It didn't happen last year with Ndamukong Suh.

Looking back, I had McCoy, Ingram, Gerhart on my fake ballot. So, I disagree.

Either way, definitely not as wide-open this year.

Should "only God" get to suspend players? Should "only God" get to fine players in professional leagues? Should "only God" get to write criminal justice laws?

Hypocritical as it can be sometimes, this is still college sports. The voting rule is written in a way that is supposed to highlight the integrity that is supposed to be a part of amateur sports, ideally. I bet almost every amateur sports award guideline in the nation is written similarly.

One thing I just hate is that this debate is being fought on the battle ground of the non-Newton-voting people's motives. That, of course, is something we can never know for sure. But it doesn't stop the Doyels and radio hosts of the world for taking them out for being sanctimonious and grandstanding.

I'd rather see people substantively argue why that is not the way that someone should vote. The motives attack is an ad hominem, unprovable attack that just misdirects us from the substances of the debate. I hate that.

Cam Newton has not been suspended. Played every game. Won every game.
What he might have done as a student at Florida two years ago is relevant to that reality how, exactly?
My point is that the hypocrites who single out a particular player in this regard, and then elevate another player as the standard of all goodness do not have the omniscience necessary to judge either party.
Remember when writers openly rooted for A-Rod to take down Barry Bonds' home run record so it would be in the hands of someone "clean"?
How'd that turn out?

Too much discussion of actual issues. Not enough discussion of the douchebag in question. Or of my belly button. BTT, and stay focused people.

If the award is supposed to account for integrity and the integrity of a player is in question then it is extremely relevant.

To say Cam Newton had no idea his daddy was shopping him around is utterly naive. We all know if Cam Newton played at Arkansas State he'd have never been reinstated.

A random conspiracy theory:

Would anyone be shocked if a few weeks or months after the title game -- once the money's been counted -- the NCAA suddenly finds "new evidence" and smacks down Auburn and Newton?

I'm going to weigh in on behalf of the nihilists and argue that everyone in college football is corrupt, or playing with someone who is corrupt, or playing for someone who is corrupt, so pretending that Cam Newton is dirty while others are clean is only another way to further perpetuate the fantasy that amateur athletics in this country are pure in any form. For God's sake, give the kid his Heisman. He's earned it with all the soulless assholes he helped make rich this season, and that should probably include people who go on television in $1,500 suits and wag their finger at him and his dad for soiling the virgin sheets of major college football.

I think the answer to this question that the thread asks is for you to go look in the mirror.

If you want to rip people, or make fun of them like a little junior high adolescent, why don't you do it here, or handle it via PM, instead of going to your little Disney Land with Zeke and Doc and all the other morons and outing people there?

You guys are pathetic. Every last one of you.

Grow up.

You must have a limitless supply of gasoline.

A man can make money but money cannot make the man.

Anyone who rips someone for exercising his/her right to vote by voting for whoever they want to is an effing jack wagon.

Doyel picks at whatever fresh scab he can find. He's an arsonist, not a columnist. He should be ripped for not writing what he believes but for writing what he thinks is controversial and will get him hits and comments. He is and will continue to be a fake columnist.

Things parents about which their parents may know little:
-- Infidelity.
-- Alcohol abuse.
-- White-collar crime.
Hey, how come all the sons and daughters of mortgage brokers and bond traders didn't recognize what their folks were up to and save us from the sub-prime mortage meltdown?
What's wrong with you children!

No problem with the column. Big problem with the language. It's possible to make the same point without talking like a seventh-grader.
