Is it just me or are there not any openings like there has been the last couple years at this time?

Or is it just too early?

There are openings, just not ones most of us would ever want to apply for.

That actually makes me feel bad. As I'm graduating in a few days, I think I've applied to every jobs posted on these boards...and if they're jobs that no one is applying for, you'd think I'd get some offers, right!?

But no. Nothing. Nada. Zippo.

My degree is looking worthless. And my parents are demanding their money back.

HA

Another reason to put yourself through school. No guilt when you don't have a job lined up for the Sunday after graduation.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
There are plenty of entry-level openings in the newspaper business (not necessarily sports). There are far fewer quality openings around which you can build a life and career. That's the regrettable thing.

I'm about to celebrate my third year at the "high-end starter" paper. Anything that gets posted isn't even a lateral move, and I'm apparently not good enough to get noticed at bigger places or there aren't openings there either.

Shoulda been a mechanic.

kinda asking for a lot with the whole "build a life and career" line of thinking, aren't you?

Ah, law school, last refuge of the jobless scoundrels of our industry. Problem is, they're producing WAY too many graduates for the jobs available (sound familiar?) and the last thing you want to do is accrue $50-100,000 debt to get a paralegal or low-level government lawyer job.

I've thought about it to the point of taking the test (157 cold three years ago) but I don't think I could hack.

I think it's still too early. A lot of jobs will start opening soon. Just give it some time.

What is What Boots says when he sees a woman from the front view?

</sorry, couldn't resist>
Why did that remind me of Celebrity Jeopardy?

"Ah, that's not what your mother told me, Trebek..."

Every woman has an orafice.
Now, to keep on topic. There are openings but they aren't being filled. Budget and laziness are the reasons for the delay.

If your state's newspaper association has a website, check it out. They may not be the New York Times, or writing features for SI, but the little dailies and weeklies provide a good place to start. The summer job rush typically seems to start in early June for those papers.

I'm finding that unless I'm willing to take a pay cut, or work for the same low salary, which is liveable, I guess, there isn't much out there yet.
When do the step-up openings start coming? Even if it's a minute step up.
I don't want to move somewhere to do the same thing for the same salary. What would be the point? Especially with travel costs so high thanks to lovely $3.50 a gallon gas prices
