"Miami (CNN) -- Burmese pythons have been threatening Florida's ecosystem for years, so the state is turning to the public for help in the form of a hunting contest to cull the population.

"The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has announced the 2013 Python Challenge beginning in January."

The state is taking precautions and such, but oh, man, this could be bad. Redneck hunters with clubs and machetes in the Everglades.

But the state should just treat them like other states treat feral pigs and declare them open for hunting year-round.

They already do. There's no protection or hunting season for the Burmese python, instead they're treated as an invasive species pest that anyone's welcome to kill any time.

But that's not enough because, let's face it, wading around a bug and critter infested swamp in search of a monster snake ain't exactly the most pleasurable way to fill a Saturday off. Killing pigs is a lot easier. Hence, the need for these contests to provide a little incentive.

Put a per snake bounty on them like Louisiana did with nutria. Make it $100 per snake and I know some folks who'll clear them out pretty quick.

Just to be clear, this is what a Nutria looks like:

Slight difference, no? There are easier ways to make a hundred bucks.

Does this not serve dual purposes? We get rid of a few pythons and we get the weeding out process of the dumb mother ****ing redneck who thought this was a good idea. Win win, really.

Take a good look at that photo. First off, you'll be hunting pythons in the Everglades, aka Swampland, Florida. And your new python friends know how to move around pretty well underwater. Be careful not to **** them off! Because they're GIANT PYTHONS! They're twice as big as you, and they can swallow you whole, and there are "tens of thousands" of them swimming around in those dark waters where you're stomping around like Clark Griswold. Finally, you'll be sharing that hot, sticky swampland with some of South Florida's finest rednecks and yahoos, and some of them are bound to be liquored up and half-crazy, and they definitely like shooting off their guns out there in the middle of nowhere. They also like playing with machetes. Don't **** them off, either!

Anyway, Happy Python Hunting!!!

These things take on alligators - sometimes they lose, but sometimes they win, too.

That's a rat hat?

One snake had 17 eggs. There are already tens of thousands of snakes in the Everglades. This move reeks of desperation. They'll never get all the pythons.

The reference to feral hogs is apt. They are reproductively mature at just over a year of age and produce two six-pig litters a year. The free-hunt strategy simply is not working.

And, if the pythons and rednecks don't get you, you're also sharing those murky swamps with countless alligators and a vast and unlimited array of other creepy bugs, spiders, leeches and other snakes.

Can't figure why Florida can't get more people to go python huntin. Quite a mystery that is.
