Yeah, but for every really stupid thing like this, or the request that Ben and Jerry's make ice cream from human milk, they get something in the paper like saving that old lobster:

NEW YORK (AP) — A new lease on life — at 140? That's what a Manhattan lobster got Friday, when the 20-pound crustacean named George was released from a swanky Park Avenue restaurant's tank. City Crab and Seafood agreed to a request from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to let the lobster return to the Atlantic Ocean.

"We applaud the folks at City Crab and Seafood for their compassionate decision to allow this noble old-timer to live out his days in freedom and peace," said PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk.

I think PETA is a bunch of nutjobs, and every time I see something like this it makes me want to run out and order a Double-Double. But they do some awesome PR stuff--love it or hate it, they get newspapers and TV stations to pick this stuff up.

Right, but at some point, the stunts to get in the news are all they are.

This doesn't change any minds. It just serves to get PETA in the news.

At a certain point you have to actually set about an agenda.

That's just absurd. If it was just a made-up name, that's one thing. But it's the name of their town!
I know the saying that any publicity is good publicity, but doesn't making yourself look this silly take away from what you are trying to accomplish?

Love the first comment. PETA -- People Eating Tasty Animals.

Indeed.

So if men watch The Little Mermaid just to see Ariel, is that killing the Sea Kittens?

There's something amazingly cool about the way you think.

I had a piece of sea kitten for dinner, it was nicely filed except they could have done a better job of removing the claws.

PETA must hate my family, I come from a long line of sea kitten hunters (Would that be the term to take over for fisherman?)

I remember a few years ago PETA tried to get a town called "Hamburg" to rename itself "Veggieburg."

That didn't pan out.

As for me, I feel like I have a personal responsibility to counter anyone who's dumb enough to allow Sea Kitten-like stunts to play on their emotions by eating more meat.

Next time, I'm ordering two burgers at McDonald's instead of one ... take that, PETA.

I totally agree....

I love my mangled Col. Sanders bobblehead I received as thanks for covering a PETA protest. We were getting calls about some blonde woman in a yellow bikini in front of a KFC dancing with a person in a chicken costume. An editor said to make a call on it and get something in the paper. I did, (they even sent photos of the blonde in question), and they sent me a prized desk ornament.
Their nude "State of the Union" address is another great moment in PR.

Reminds me of an exchange from the Alan Alda movie "Sweet Liberty."

Bo Hodges: You realize who goes to see movies. Eighty percent of them are between the ages of 12 and 22. And you know what the kids like?
Michael Burgess: What?
Bo Hodges: Well, this may sound silly to you, but kids go completely ape if you do three things in a picture: defy authority, destroy property, and take people's clothes off.

I'm in a facebook group called "For every piece of meat you don't eat, I'm going to eat three."

:D

The jacket notes on Denis Leary's new book ask, "if God didn't want us to eat meat, why did He make cows so slow? Ever eaten a cheetah-burger? Nope, and you never will." :D

Why not Sea Pussies? I mean really, that's ageism against all cats. It should be Sea Pussies.
