We are Marshall: 50 years ago today

They could have gotten eyeballs by letting Randy Moss narrate it.

So it was one of my first Saturday nights at the newspaper. We got word of the crash and realized one of the players on the team was from one of our high schools. One one of our reporters (not known for tact) called his HS coach, a crusty old SOB. The phone conversation went like this:
Our guy: "Hey coach, what can you tell me about Joe Jock?"
His coach: "Why do you want to know about him?"
Our guy: "Aw, he got killed in a plane crash tonight."
Dead silence for several seconds ... maybe more than that.
Our guy: "Coach, are you there, are you there? I need a comment. We're on deadline. What do you remember about him? I'm on a deadline."

The Marshall air disaster happened a month and 12 days after the Wichita State air disaster. Must've missed that movie.

Cal Poly's crash was October of 1960. Given the millions of flying miles traveled by pro and college teams, it's a testament to how safe it's gotten.

I remember reading somewhere that baseball does have a contingency that would involve a dispersal draft from the remaining teams. Not sure about the other leagues.

His history with the crash is not good

"The plane crash was before my time. I don't try to go back in the past and say this football game is for the people in the plane crash. I've seen the burial ground. I went up there and looked at the names. It was a tragedy, but it really wasn't nothing big."

John Madden graduated from Cal Poly a couple of years before and was friends with some of the crash victims. He said that crash was one of the main reasons why he hated to fly, and stopped flying after he retired from coaching.

Former USC coach Ted Tollner was on the SLO plane.
