This is where I make a distinction between racist and racially ignorant or insensitive.

It wasn't racist, but it was woefully ignorant of the history of blackface, and thus insensitive.

This.

It's not racist, it's just ignorant. There is a big difference.

Racist was the Native American who I booted from my table last night because he said he was glad there were no ******s on the table.

When I was about 7, I dressed up as Stevie Wonder for Halloween. With black face.

I was horrified to see the photo recently.

I was even more horrified that, to this day, my mother could not fathom that this was inappropriate or racist.

It wasn't racist, you were dressing up as an American music star whose face happens to be black. Just like it would not have been racist is, say he was an oriental singer, you made your face yellow in tone or an American Indian singer, you made your face red in tone.

It was a costume, nothing more, nothing less.

Curious: If depicting a certain former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver, which coloration should one apply?

Wege Thompson and Greg Garrity are both white - so you could do whatever you want to depict them and make fun of them and nobody would care....

I'm more horrified that a 7 year old would want to dress up as Steve Wonder. Weird.
Were all the Casper costumes sold out?

I remember that awful sitcom Gimme a Break, where the daughter in the family was mad at Nell Carter, and she talked her little brother into doing a skit while in blackface to try and hurt her.

It worked. And it probably was about as funny as this instance of blackface.

Oriental?

Zag, seriously you never heard that? Guess you didn't see The Big Lebowski. Walter told Donnie the proper nomenclature is Asian.

Persons from the Orient. That is the politically correct term these days for those people or has it changed?

I can't keep up.

"Oriental" is the term for inanimate objects.

Rugs are Oriental.

People are Asian.

What the hell are you talking about?

I thought the people of the Orient/Asia/China are no longer to be referred to as Asian as the Politically Correct among us have claimed that Asian is a derogatory term with negative stereotypes.

So if it isn't Oriental and/or Asian - what is the proper term for people from that region now? I honestly can't keep track.

Dave Casper was neither a Steeler nor a wide receiver.

I think he was referring to Hines Ward (black/Korean)

Buddy Dial, actually. Pretty racist of you to think I would call out Hines Ward like that.

Would like to remind you all that not only is the chinaman not the issue here, the preferred nomenclature is "Asian-American."

Excellent. Missed this when posting yesterday. Have to watch again now. Did Donnie say Chinaman, not Oriental?

Someone actually watched Gimme a break? I really think I need to sit down

CFL player Khalif Mitchell also has some confusion on the Oriental/Asian/(obviously racist term) issue:

I remember that episode. The little kid in blackface was Joey Lawrence. That's when I learned that blackface was offensive (i was young)
