Um, if the course is unsafe for spectators, it's probably not safe for players, officials and TV types, either.

There's so much infrastructure that goes into hosting 20,000 at a golf tournament and most of it was shredded by the storm. But if you can get the course ready -- just the course -- you can get in one round with a minimum of staff on hand.

Oh, I know there's a ton of infrastructure. I'm amazed at how much goes into these events.

But the whole purpose of even having a pro golf tour --- or any pro league --- is for the fans. If the fans aren't there, might as well close up shop and go home. Would have been better to just push the whole thing back a day and do what they can to get the venue accessible.

Then Johnson goes back into the bunker where he hit in the water the first time -- and drills it to a foot of the cup.

Great finish for Zach after Matteson drained about a 60-foot eagle putt on No. 17 to force the playoff.

I know it's a footnote for most golf fans, but for a relatively small burg like the Quad-Cities region, the JDC is a huge event, and the community support is tremendous. Despite the annual steam bath conditions, I always enjoyed attending it.

Roger Chapman becomes the fourth person -- joining Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Hale Irwin --- to win the Senior PGA Championship and the US Senior Open in the same year.

Was a really fun tournament to watch, from Tom Kite shooting 28 on the front nine Thursday to Bernhard Langer shooting 64 and leading by five shots at one point on Saturday to Chapman coming from behind to win at -10 (270). Nice to see the USGA set up a course where players could actually be aggressive on certain holes and think about making birdies.

Zach Johnson's swing coach caddied for him this weekend because his regular caddie was playing in the Senior Open. I think CBS said he finished 17th.

Helluva collapse by Furyk yesterday. 4 clear at one point, flubs a chip on the 72nd....miss a 5-footer.....don't even get into a playoff.

One more reason why CBS' golf coverage reigns supreme......1st hole Saturday......Cabrera-Bello makes a mess on the 1st hole.....finally gets to the green.....shanks his greenside chip......Feherty's response...."I want my mommy!".......Another one had Cabrera-Bello drive it dead left into the woods after going all over Ohio on the previous hole.....Feherty chimes in "I might have to get a 5-hour energy from Furyk".......

Jeez, what a bad year for Furyk, the dead pull at Olympic and know a double from the fairway on 18 at Firestone. I have a hard time recalling someone "choking" (says Miller) multiple times down the stretch in one year (let alone a career.)

They all have had their tough moments. Play golf long enough and you have the bad with the good. Furyk hasn't "choked" any more or less than other guys (Phil Winged Foot 06; Tiger Hazeltine 09; Els, Garcia, Love, too many times to mention).

Greg Norman finished second in all four majors in 1986. Came back and won the British Open and a Players Championship.

For sure. In today's golf world, just about anyone can win any week. Furyk's still a good player and should be on the Ryder Cup team.

Even though this is the worst running thread title in the history of SJ...

...there was a classic Van de Velde in the US Amateur championship today, and a fellow UTC Moc ended up winning the prestigious title, as a result. Guy from Cal gagged on the 18th by sending a 3 foot putt too hard at the hole, so it lipped out...and the kid from Tennessee sunk his to come back from 2 down with 2 to go. The Cali guy blew the playoff tee-shot, and was later left a little angry and in tears:
