Contrary to the belief of many, this is not a one-stop source for all journalism information. Someone was kind enough to share the site with me and I thought it interesting enough to pass it along. If you can use it good. If you can't, it's still good.

That map's depressing as hell. And it doesn't even have everything, such as the Spokane Spokesman-Review laying off 14 newsroom employees last month:

We (my coworkers and I) used to talk about this stuff all the time pre-2008, but since then there are so many bad signs, we just put blinders on, crank out the pages, and come back the next day. If the door doesn't open or our keycard doesn't work, then we'll know it's our turn.

I'd like to think most of the people behind the numbers on that map have found work in other fields. I hope they have.

The person who runs this site is a journalist and it's a volunteer effort. If you are aware of layoffs, such as those listed above, send an e-mail to [email protected]. She keeps all tips anonymous.

I think it's a public service to run that site. I can see where not everyone would want to keep track, but if you ever need that information, it's there.

Yup. Former co-worker took the buyout there. And the site is also missing the closing of the Rocky Mountain News in 2009, though the map that year was so cluttered, it's probably easy to miss it.

Yes, the sarcasm meter needs oiling very badly. No one has been back there to inspect the goods in four months.

Steven A. Smith hasn't been at the Spokesman-Review in years. He quit around 2008 after having to announce that most of the young staffers got decimated. The S-R has had several early retirements recently, particularly in sports. Here's the summary of the departures, per APSE:

"The (Spokane) The Spokesman-Review: The paper offered an early retirement package and five members of the sports department accepted and will retire on Dec. 31. Leaving will be deputy sports editor Gil Hulse; columnist John Blanchette; and staff writers Steve Bergum, Vince Grippi and Dave Trimmer. The five veteran staff members represent more than 150 years of experience in newspapers. Hulse has been the ASE for seven years and the lead sports copy editor for 21 years. Blanchette is an APSE award-winning columnist and has been with the S-R for 30 years. Bergum (32 years at the S-R), a former SE at the S-R, has covered Washington State football and basketball, Gonzaga basketball and currently has the Eastern Washington University beat. Vince Grippi (28 years) currently covers Washington State football and basketball. He is also a former S-R graphics editor. Trimmer (23 years) covers Spokane Chiefs hockey, women's basketball and preps. Blanchette has agreed to write columns as a correspondent and Hulse will work on the copy desk as a part-timer. In addition, former sports editor Jeff Jordan will take the retirement package and work part-time on the sports copy desk. The department hopes to make two new hires."
