Hi, I'm Ed Odeven, a veteran sports journalist who has worked in Japan for 20 years, reporting on and editing domestic and international sports coverage. My reporting experience here includes two decades on the pro basketball beat and extensive, live coverage of the 2008 Beijing Games and the 2012 London Games, as well as the 2006 FIBA World Basketball Championship and other major events for The Japan Times. Since May 2020, I've overseen the fledgling website Japan Forward's sports department, writing a weekly column, a weekend Japan Sports Notebook and much more, including an eight-part series on the 25th anniversary of Hideo Nomo's MLB rookie season and more than 10 Naoya Inoue title fights.
I'm seeking occasional work as a freelance writer, editor, researcher and proofreader. For example, for overseas media outlets, I'm interested in pursuing spot-news coverage and features that can be tailored to hometown and regional publications about foreign-born athletes in Japan. General interest sports news, Q&As and historical topics are among the other topics I am always interested in exploring. And I'm always eager to tackle new editing tasks, too.
I have more than 30 years of experience in the newspaper business, including stints as sports editor of a community college weekly (Pima Community College's The Aztec Press), a university weekday paper (Arizona State's State Press) and a city newspaper (Arizona Daily Sun). I've also freelanced for dozens of publications and websites spanning the globe.
