A veteran corrections officer was shot and killed at a clinic south of University Hospital today during an escape attempt by a white supremacist prisoner with a history of weapons violations. The alleged shooter was later arrested after a high-speed chase.
"This has been a tragic day for law enforcement," said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Rich Brede.
The federal inmate, identified by the Salt Lake police as Curtis Michael Allgier, was arrested by officers in an Arby's fast food restaurant on the corner of 17th South and Redwood Road.
The shooting happened about 7:45 a.m., according to a University Hospital spokesman. The man apparently took a gun from the officer, identified at a late morning press conference as Stephen Anderson, 60.
Scott Folsom, University of Utah public safety director, said there were no witnesses to the shooting, which took place in a first-floor exam room at an orthopedic center. He said the inmate and the Anderson were in the room alone when a struggle happened and the inmate wrested the gun from the Anderson, shooting the officer in the head.
Sadly, he'll get a hero's welcome when he's returned to prison.

Re: But he looked like such a nice boy

How awful.

A quick side note, this guy was on an old edition of MSNBC's Locked Up that aired early Sunday morning. I was flipping though the channels and this idiot was talking about his belief system and how everyone in his family was like him. I recognized the tats where his eyebrows would be.

I hope he accidently slips into the yard while the minorities are out doing their thing. It would be a great way to bring the gangs together.

Re: But he looked like such a nice boy

This is a case where I kinda wish a cop had 'seen' a weapon during the re-apprehension and crippled this guy with a shot to the spine.

No death, just a long life in the clink without the use of his body.

Guy must have really wanted a Beef N' Cheddar sandwich. I wish he'd choked on it.

this is terrible. i can't imagine being a prison guard. at least if you were a cop you'd occasionally have the chance to help people. i guess prison guards are helping the rest of society but the job is beyond thankless.

For a glimpse of what it's like, read Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing. A guy became a guard there for the sole purpose of writing a book about it. Pretty scary stuff.

And after he escaped, what was he going to do? Disguise himself as graffiti?
Waste of flesh....

As terrifying a mug shot as I have seen

He/It killed a 60-year-old prison guard in Utah.

I imagine guards at the federal level would have to carry firearms.
The ones in the state correctional system in my state don't. They aren't allowed to, just for that exact circumstance.

The stories say he was in the can on weapons charges. Apparently this was his first violent crime. And it also said even the inmates didn't like him. Can't see why. If you get kicked out of a white supremist prison gang in Utah, you must really be some kind of asshole. Thoughts and prayers to the officer's family.

Also, why in the world would he be left alone in a room with just one guard? Hopefully that's not the policy, and if it is, it needs to be rewritten pdq.

But how out of place are those glasses on that face?
