Thoughts On Bo Ryan?

Another one of the NCAA's ridiculous rules exploited by another arrogant prick of a coach.

They want these kids to be considered as "student athletes," but they're not even allowed to go to college where they want.

They can go to the college they want, they just can't get it paid for, and/or they're not allowed to participate in the extracurricular activity they want.

Right--I just meant if they want to play, they can't transfer where they want, and at any rate, they might have to sit out a year...

To be fair, he didn't like it one bit. He hates that rule. He came out publicly against it when asked about it by local reporters.

He was asked about it last season, after it became a topic on the Big Ten coaches' teleconference. Weber and Izzo also criticized the rule -- despite the fact they used the rule to add such transfers. I know both Izzo and Weber. Both good guys but both hypocrites on that topic.

In general, I don't think it's hypocritical to dislike a rule and then use it. If you refuse to use a rule on principle - just because you don't like it - you're putting yourself at a disadvantage unnecessarily. John Calipari says he doesn't like one-and-dones, but uses them extensively because the rules allow it. That doesn't make him a hypocrite.

That is interesting logic. Two coaches say the rule should be changed, that a player who has his degree should not be allowed to transfer and play immediately, that it's not right. Yet they opt to sign such a player and they're not hypocritical?

Honorable then?

Substitute extramarital affair for signing such players and get back to me.

If you think the rule is wrong, should be changed and coaches shouldn't sign such kids then don't sign one for your team. If you do sign one, STFU.

Anyone who's been around him, watched his teams play, watched him ***** and moan about EVERY whistle ... he's conceited for no reason (never really WON anything). Asshole in my book. But he was that way BEFORE this transfer deal. So there's that.

I know people don't like Tony (or Ryan) but the coach has played a significant role in changing the culture in that program. Compare their NCAA history up through the 2000 Final Four to what it has been like under Ryan and it's pretty impressive.

I think people can't or won't agree because they don't like the guy. He is a pain in the posterior but he does run a clean program and he can coach.

In all seriousness, I had no problem with him until this happened and really don't now. I've always had a soft spot for teams that win ugly, though.

His stance on this transfer issue is not one of them. He is deservedly getting raked over the coals.

Example: UW just got shutdown and it knocked them down a peg in the B1G race late in the season. Bo comes into the presser...AP intern (a younger kid) is first to ask a question and starts with a fairly innocuous statement to get Ryan to talk. Something like: "Coach, this one has got to hurt a bit..."
Kid doesn't even get to finish...Bo glares at him, starts tapping his chest, grabbing his arms and saying: "Nothing on me hurts...I don't know what you are talking about...'this has got to hurt.' I feel fine."

I thought Bob Huggins was King Assclown...but the new champ was crowned right there.

I think I was at that presser, or that's a line he's used more than once.

Writing as an alum and one that nearly walked-on there "once upon a time".

Ryan embarrassed the program with "bitter old man" bit all week. Although, I had a feeling it would drop to a restriction on only Big Ten schools. The charade wasn't worth it all week and now the others will use it as "Ryan is out of touch". Well, he is.

This makes me long for Ryan to move on and for the prodigal son himself, Tony Bennett, to return.

Bo has always been prickly, even back in Division III. He still coaches with a chip on his shoulder from having to coach 15 years in Platteville. You would, too.

Making players sit a year makes perfect sense. Blocking them from schools does not. And Ryan forcing the player, even though it is the right thing to do, to say it to someone's face at Wisconsin makes him come off as a complete prick.

And the interviews he is doing on Mike and Mike and Mad Dog are making him look even worse.

The rules for kids transferring should be exactly the same as the rules for coaches leaving to take another job. If they're going to restrict a kid from transferring within a conference (or within several, as Ryan tried to do) and make him sit out a year, it should apply to the coaches. You want to jump your school for the big money? Fine. You can't go to another school within your league and you have to sit out a year.
Tired of coaches like Urban Meyer preaching loyalty and then pulling the **** they pull.

But yeah, Wiscy is the school that worries me in terms of stealing Bennett. At least he went to Green Bay, so it's not his alma mater.

Worth noting that when Tony Bennett was at UW-Green Bay during his playing days, they were a better program than Steve Yoder's Badgers. Also, Ryan was an assistant with Yoder from 1982-84 at Wisconsin. At that time, **** Bennett was still at Stevens Point. There is a rich backstory to the Ryan/Bennett dynamic.

Is Bo Ryan a ****? No clue. Don't know him personally, although I do know a couple family members and they're terrific people.

And while I do agree that handing Uthof a "no transfer" list with 26 or so schools on it was excessive, I don't blame Ryan for trying to protect his program from being poached by schools that have no ethical qualms about tampering with his players.

Prevent coaches from putting these restrictions on transfers and you'll open the floodgates for the scummiest of the scum to prey on every kid who's even the least bid dissatisfied with his playing time or role on his team.
