I'm never patient enough to wait for these with my favorite shows. I always end up buying them individually long before the complete sets are released.

I did that also.

Thanks for the link Dan, great read.

You can buy the set for only $89.99 at both Amazon and Best Buy.com right now. I'm hoping those deals last past Christmas should Santa not drop one off on Thursday morning.

I wasn't taking any chances. Asked Mrs. Dascenzo if she'd gotten it for me. She said no, so I quickly clicked "add to cart."

Single seasons go for $40-$50 a pop everywhere I see them, so $90 for the series is a steal.

Great, great show. I'm only nearing the end of the fourth season. Any spoilers in the link?

Top of my Christmas list. Actually, I think it was the only thing on my Christmas list.

No spoilers - there is some information in there, but no major plot points.

Got it the other day and am midway through Season 1. So far, the discs don't seem to have many special features (1-2 commentaries per season), so you might be just as well to have bought it season-by-season if you've already done so.

Dude, seriously? It talks about several people who get killed in Season 5 in like the third paragraph.

Warning: Post contains information about characters who did NOT die in Season 5, contrary to what Double Down thinks.

The way the second and third graphs read, I agree, it makes it sound like those three people died (and/or stole from their sister) in Season 5, but anyone who has watched knows that's not the case. Either that's not what the author intended, or he royally screwed up. Hell, Snot-boogie is dead during the first scene of Season 1.

I also think that newsweek column is much more hopeful than realistic. People have this this weird habit of feeling like The Wire lacks authenticity if it doesn't mirror their own expierences with West Baltimore. I find that to be a little dishonest, frankly.

I checked Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City, Sam's, WalMart and Target sites today, and the cheapest I could find was about $135. I really wish I had seen this thread the day it was posted; I would have had one more gift this Christmas. Not that I needed any more, because it was a blessed holiday for the Wilson family.

I read it again - and I don't see what I classify as spoilers, nothing that will wreck the viewing experience.
Another great column on The Wire in comparison with The Shield:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2008/dec/27/tv-drama-david-simon-wire-shield

That was a strange column: David Simon backstory. Homicide, Homicide, Homicide. The Wire. Oh, by the way, the Shield is better. Because it's darker. Pure black dark. Back to the Wire, or at least the first two seasons. Second season kinda sucked. Exit.

Personally, I think The Wire is the best TV show I've ever seen. No question. Haven't watched much of The Shield, though. Is it close?

Agreed about the story. And yeah, The Shield is pretty damn good. Definitely worth investing the time.

I love the Shield, have all six seasons out so far on DVD. What I can't stand about that show, however, is that every season there are two or three plot lines that are just completely unnecessary/under-utilized. But, I like the overlying themes in the show so I let it slide.

Watched first four episodes of The Wire, yesterday, for grins.

It isn't as good as I remembered it.

It's better.

The Shield was too unrealistic. No way Vic inflicts so much damage and skates basically until the end. Good show but not close to The Wire.
