In Defense of Our Own


What’s been happening on several threads this week is not personal.

This is a protest.

A protest against willful ignorance and casual cruelty. A protest against disrespect. A protest against the triumph of petty politics over common human decency. To say

at the end of a week in which three of our own colleagues were killed in Iraq is to me an act of stunning callousness. It shows an absolutely heartless disregard for the unimaginable sacrifice some journalists have made on behalf of free speech, a free press and a free society. That it was made by someone who purports to be a journalist on a journalism message board is unfathomable to me.

As has been said here: if someone insulted the high and final price paid by more than 3,000 of our soldiers in the same way, there’d have been very hard feelings indeed, and justifiably. So, yes, I'm angry. Fantastically so.

For nearly a week, I’ve asked Yawn to apologize for the stupidity and hurtfulness of his remarks. I have pointedly not asked him to apologize to me. Nor to anyone here.

He needs to apologize to his fallen colleagues. He needs to apologize to their families. He needs to apologize to them for his remarkable ignorance of their sacrifice, and for mocking that sacrifice. From the safety of his stateside armchair, he needs to apologize to the memories of people much braver and more resolute than himself. He needs to do so without cowardly equivocation or qualification.

Many of us here are working journalists. Some of us have been to the Persian Gulf. Others are about to embark. Nearly 200 working journalists have already been killed trying to cover the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hundreds more have been injured. More, sadly, will die before it’s over. All in service of the idea that Americans – of every political persuasion - need accurate information on which to base this nation’s decisions. Can we do any less than honor their sacrifice and defend their memory?

Let's look at things from the standpoint of status, shall we?

Iraq is a cluster****, the Taliban is back in business big time in Afghanistan and Al Qaeda, according to the Bush team's own NIE, is as formidable as on Sept. 10, 2001. That is three fronts that are just as big of a threat to the U.S. -- if not bigger, certainly in Iraq's case -- than they were before our ****-swinging, drugstore-cowboy war president went in.

You have to try to **** up this spectacularly.

But, you see, on planet Yawn, this isn't the fault of the ****tards who, you know, are executing this 1962-Mets approach to national security. It's the fault of those who performed such undermining sins as not wearing their American flag lapel pins fervently enough and not swallowing the whole the bull**** dished out from this clowning, corrupt administration.

Your head is an echo chamber where very, very stupid bats roost. But please, keep talking. Shout your intellectual wankery from the rooftops of SportsJournalists.com and whatever other outlets you can find.

For I want as many Americans to be reminded about what conservatives of your ilk stand for -- so they will never, ever again make the mistake of putting one of them within 500 miles of the Oval Office.
