The Register-Guard, a 60,000-daily newspaper in Eugene, Oregon, is seeking a sports editor to lead a staff of 11.
The Register-Guard sports department - a consistent top-10 APSE award winner - is considered a center of excellence for our news organization, which is the second largest in the state. Our mission is local coverage with an emphasis on college athletics. We cover the University of Oregon’s nationally-ranked football program, as well as Oregon State, 45 minutes away. We cover men’s and women’s college basketball with the Ducks playing in a new $200 million arena. We cover college baseball and other non-revenue sports. We cover the scene in the Track Capital of the United States, from the UO’s nationally competitive track and field teams to major national meets held at Hayward Field such as the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and, in 2012, the Olympic Trials. And we heavily cover the local high school scene.
The successful applicant will have spent at least seven years in print sports journalism. He or she will have demonstrated the ability to cover big stories, and the ability to lead and inspire others through work ethic and ideas, the ability to work well with others, the ability to integrate the Internet - blogs, video, Facebook, Web updates, new frontiers of digital journalism - into daily coverage.
In our shop, you’d be a front-line editor, reporting the news as well as directing coverage. We’re looking for a meticulous planner, sharp editor and forward-leaning thinker to lead a talented, hard-working veteran staff to greater heights. We need an experienced journalist who can manage, plan, innovate and bring great energy, but has no fear of the digital future.
Application and complete job description available at www.registerguard.com.
Qualified applicants who are interested in joining a successful and respected organization should submit an application, cover letter and resume by May 25, 2011 to [email protected] or mail to Sports Editor, The Register-Guard, Human Resources, 3500 Chad Drive, Eugene, OR 97408.
