Job Title: Sports Editor

Location: Crystal Lake, IL
  • Shaw Media is looking for an enthusiastic, digitally minded sports editor to oversee local and regional sports coverage for the McHenry County-based Northwest Herald, and to help oversee other companywide, sports-related projects. Instant delivery of sports news to a diverse audience via social media and other outlets is a priority.
  • Covering about 20 high schools in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, the Northwest Herald has long prided itself on its robust coverage of prep and other community sports.
  • We are looking for an editor who will continue to grow our print and digital audience, and who relishes taking chances with innovative enterprise and feature ideas. The editor will be expected to cover events and write interesting local enterprise stories, as well as supervise and edit other sports writers and correspondents.
  • Candidates must understand the difference between writing and editing for print and writing and editing for various digital platforms, and that today's sports news must be reported as it happens. A strong understanding and comfort level with disseminating news and scores via social media is essential.
  • Candidates should possess a passion for community sports journalism and the ability to work collaboratively with photographers, reporters and sports editors from other Shaw markets to produce great newspapers, magazines and websites.
  • At least three years of professional experience preferred. Solid knowledge of AP Style and grammar is required. Experience with the web and multimedia is a plus.
  • Shaw Media offers a comprehensive benefit package.
Interested candidates may submit a resume and cover letter to:

This is my previous job. Enjoyed it a ton. Worked with some great people. I was promoted to editor of our papers in Joliet/Morris recently. The sports editor before me, Eric Olson, was promoted to editor of our paper in DeKalb. Good tradition at the paper and good group of people to work with, in my opinion.

Christmas lights year round in Joliet!

Herald is a good paper.

Can't seem to find an answer anywhere online: How many people comprise the sports desk at this paper and what are their jobs/duties?

There are two full-time reporters, two part-time reporters and an assistant sports editor, who is part of the universal copy desk. All provide local coverage (prep/community sports).
