JournalismJobs.com - Job Listing - Sports Editor

The Helena Independent Record, an 8,000 circulation daily in Montana’s vibrant capital city, is seeking a digitally oriented sports editor to direct a 3 1/2-person staff and work closely with four other Lee Montana editors on a rapidly growing statewide sports website (406mtsports.com).

We’re looking for someone with an eye for compelling content beyond the formulaic gamer and boilerplate feature on the star of last week’s game. While our primary focus is on longtime NAIA football powerhouse Carroll College and five high schools, Helena also is an energetic mix of folks who run, pedal, swim and engage in a variety of athletic pursuits.

Our ideal candidate will understand the importance of balancing our traditional print footprint needs with a growing attention to our expanding digital world. Shifts will range from producing the daily print section and weekly Carroll game-day tabs to pursuing features about local athletes who spur interest in Helena and across our vast, intimate state.

We are looking for someone eager to immerse themselves in a community passionate about sports and rapidly become a recognizable face at events. The ability to mentor two reporters, consistently produce written content, create a stimulating work environment and communicate well is critical.

Social and digital media savvy are essential. Photo skills are a big plus.

Collaboration with Lee sports sections in Billings, Missoula, Butte and Hamilton mean you’ll receive statewide content of local interest, including University of Montana and Montana State University sports, the Frontier Conference and rodeo. The deputy sports editor reports both to the editor of the Independent Record and the 406mtsports.comexecutive sports editor.

Built around Last Chance Gulch and evoking images of its mining heyday, Helena is a family-friendly and picturesque community halfway between Yellowstone and Glacier national parks. The area has become one of the region’s mountain biking meccas, fishing on the nearby Missouri River is superb, and a wealth of other outdoor activities await in the mountains and on the lakes just outside your backdoor.

The IR is an equal opportunity employer with an excellent benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, paid holidays and a generous paid time off policy. Salary depends on experience. Visit our websites at www.helenair.com and www.406mtsports.com.
