Spokesman-Review announces cuts

I had heard about this, but was hoping it was just a rumor. 30 people in the building will be laid off, including 10 to 15 in the newsroom. The newsroom has 137 workers. Prepress, circulation and marketing will also lose people.

Well, if you're the Cowles family in Spokane, you turn a pretty solid newspaper into a nonprofit, run by the current editor of the paper:

Nonprofit sounds neat. What it means in reality is you need a few rich people to sustain your operation at any scale. And they have to like your product.

The upshot is that I'm guessing the politics of the reporters will roughly match that of the progressive benefactors who supply most of the money, so it'll be like NPR website - with sports.
