The sad-sack Bucs fired a pierogi.

Too ridiculous to make up: One of the guys who dresses as a pierogi for the mid-game knockoff of the Brewers' sausage race, making $25 per night as a part-timer, wasn't too impressed with the absurd contract extensions given to comatose manager John Russell and the equally inept GM. So he fired off this (sic) wisecrack on his Facebook page: "Coonelly extended the contracts of Russell and Huntington through the 2011 season. That means a 19-straight losing streak. Way to go Pirates."

A few hours later, the team's mascot coordinator calls and fires him.

I know Facebook is a minefield when you're dealing with your employer, but give me a freaking break. I know the Russell-Huntington extensions were discussed at length on the running baseball thread. But the manner in they were publicly disclosed -- extended in October, but kept a secret because the Bucs were ashamed to extend them after a 17th straight losing season -- cemented their status as the laughingstock of MLB.

This ... this just makes me genuinely embarrassed to have grown up a Pirate fan.

I wasn't clear in my 2 a.m. post. I've been genuinely embarrassed to have grown up a Pirate fan plenty of times. Nothing necessarily new there, I type as I look at my Tom Gorzelanny bobblehead -- the one that has Gorzelanny's middle finger extending out of the back of the glove. Perfectly symbolic.

What the pierogi kid did was stupid. No question, you can't rip your employer (even with a factually-based criticism, saying what everyone is thinking) and expect to keep a job. But the Pirates' management HAD to know how this would play in the papers and on the talk shows. Just stupid, all around.

That's only because everything that's happened since October 1992 has made you numb to something like this. At this point, it's simply comical. You see a story like this, roll your eyes and go, "Those are my Bucs."

No, people actually go to Cubs games because it's The Thing To Do in Chicago. PNC, not so much. But I agree, it might be the best stadium in baseball. Had a blast when I was there last year--I grew up with the really bad Atlanta Braves teams so I love empty stadiums where you can get great seats cheap and have room to roam.

That's only because everything that's happened since October 1992 has made you numb to something like this. At this point, it's simply comical. You see a story like this, roll your eyes and go, "Those are my Bucs."

Oh, it goes back before October 1992. They started dismantling that team for financial reasons (y'all can argue the cheap bastards vs. lack of funds if you like) before the 1992 season. They started losing key supporting players after the 1990 season, which was probably the best in that three-year run of division titles.

Then they started letting bigger guns go after 1991 (Bonilla and Smiley). They had already made the bad decisions that led to Bonds and Drabek leaving after the '92 season by then. Most of us knew it was coming all along, which is what made the end of the '92 season so painful. It was very clear that they would not be back in that position again for a very long time.

Remember when the fans walked out of a game to protest the team's front office? I think that tells you everything you need to know about this team's chances. I can't even remember the last time when the Pirates contended for a playoff spot (or a winning record).
