Apparently he was flying out of Cleveland Hopkins Airport and, umm, had a loaded gun in his bag. Bad idea.

I'll add: What they were saying on the radio, but I don't have a link that says it, is that Rogers claimed he simply forgot the gun was in his bag.

Yeah, he thought it was a 5-pound smoked salami he brought along to munch on as a mid-flight snack.

Nice!

Not sure why Shaun Rogers needs a gun. Guy is quite imposing. I can't imagine too many people would think it's a good idea to mess with him. Or, even share the sidewalk with the guy.

On the football side, I guess this adds DT as yet another area of need for the Browns, now?

fat, armed and stupid is no way to get through a metal detector

Here's a longer story on it from ESPN.com, FWIW. Charges haven't been filed yet. Arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, which can range from probation to 5 years in prison.

This is what's known as The Barry Switzer Defense.

Just in on AP:

"I'm truly remorseful, and I really can't put into words how unfortunate the incident is," Rogers said. "Again, I'm completely sorry."

blah blah blah blah yack yack yadda yadda

won't anyone think of the children?

I don't really care about these kinds of stories. I can actually buy that he forgot it was in the bag. Tell me that you wouldn't have a gun if you played in the NFL today. I sure as hell would. It's not like he was gonna go hijack the plane.

NO FREAKIN WAY.

It's an airplane and a gun and even monumentally stupid people think, "hey, they have security at airports.". You don't forget about that gun, you think the rules don't apply to you.

Except that it's not like this is the first time he's gotten on a plane. The guy is on planes all the time, I'm assuming he usually doesn't take guns on. I'm sure he's usually aware that he can get in big trouble.

Yeah, I think I'll start carrying guns into airports, courthouses, etc etc, because it's not like I'm gonna hijack a plane or shoot up a courthouse.

Then again, I might just continue to obey the law. I know it sounds crazy but it seems to have worked so far.

I'm not saying he should get off. I'm just making the point it's pretty obvious he isn't a real threat, and given the number of times he's been on airplanes, I can actually believe he forgot it was in the bag. If this is the first time he's had a problem with this, what was he doing all those other times? He obviously made sure not to be carrying his gun, so I don't really buy that he thought the rules didn't apply to him.

That works both ways. If someone is used to being on airplanes they know in advance the hassle of security.

IllMil, why would he have a loaded gun in a packed bag that he WASN'T taking on a plane? I mean, when you go on trips, do you just pick up a bag you packed weeks before? Or why would you just randomly have a loaded gun in a bag? Wouldn't you want the gun WITH you?

"I'm an NFL player! I'm not a threat to hijack a plane or... KILL anyone!"

Killing your ex girlfriend/wife, is a little different from randomly shooting up a plane.
