Or did they? Is the IP hoping that their DNA test comes back negative for the man they've named in their court records, but positive for this killer who has an MO that matches the crime Adnan is convicted for? Are they protecting Adnan, since he's in the same prison?

1) To believe that, it would require believing that Jay basically fabricated *everything*, which seems a bit far-fetched to me. Or, that he somehow knew this other killer.

2) The victim in the other case was raped and killed. Hae wasn't raped.

3) The victim was found in Herring Run Park, which is 8 to 9 miles away from Leakin Park, where Hae's body was found.

4) There isn't any evidence the other guy was actually a serial killer and/or rapist. As far as I know, he was picked up for armed robbery one time, and while serving for that his DNA matched the open case. He seems like a despicable guy, but outside of living near Hae and choking the other girl, there isn't much similarity between the cases. (I think Chuck Klosterman got into it more on the one Grantland podcast about Serial, but I believe there was also issues with the times of the crimes and the victims also not really matching.)
 
I don't think it's a stretch to remove "Adnan" from everything Jay says about the murder and replace it with this guy...who was a high-level weed distributor in Jay's neighborhood. Was he Jay's supplier?

I think the story linked above (Jay's interview from today) makes a lot of sense about why he lied more than he told the truth. Between wanting to protect his grandmother, and the whole "snitches get stitches" thing...
 
Yeah, it's amazing how you can come up with something that makes more sense given multiple opportunities and 15 years to revise your story.

Guy's a scumbag, and the fact that anyone can be jailed for a life term on his ever-changing story and such flimsy "evidence" is appalling.

I find myself thinking:

A) The great likelihood (80-plus percent) is that Adnan did it;

and

B) He shouldn't have been convicted.

Which makes it a kind of terrifying look at American justice. Maybe not as breaking news, but a strong reminder.
 
Rewatching the Wire season 4, and Leakin Park gets several prominent mentions from the Bunk and Lester. Forgot about that ...

These are my sentiments exactly; should have been found not guilty, but most likely he ain't innocent.

Jay's latest interview, in which he talks about the original tip came from within the mosque -- makes a lot of sense as well.
 
Listened to the first episode and never picked it back up but not because I didn't enjoy it. In a way it's been fun to follow the saga through hundreds of folks on the socials.

A great possible subject for Season 2: Aaron Hernandez.

Seems too high profile, although I do kind of wonder where they go from here. I can't remember if it was in the thread on this board, or another board, but someone said in an interview the creators said it wouldn't be another crime story.
 
Glenn Greenwald's site interviews the prosecutor. Also lobs a heavy accusation that Koenig went for the wrongful-conviction angle because it was the only way to sell the story.

Early on in the case, Urick said, the defense sent a disclosure to the state saying it had 80 witnesses who would testify that Adnan was praying at the mosque during part of the time period when Adnan allegedly buried Hae’s body. But when the defense found out that the cellphone records showed that Adnan was nowhere near the mosque, it killed that alibi and those witnesses were never called to testify at the trial.

Those same cellphone records also corroborated Jay’s testimony about Adnan’s movements on the night of the crime.
 
Koenig was sold on the story by a lawyer who is an advocate for Adnan.

She wanted to believe he was innocent. And, she constantly says, or has people saying that he doesn't "look like a killer".

And, she introduces a potential alibi witness, Asia, in episode two.

This whole thing exploded because her audience came to believe that she would prove him innocent by the end.
 
If you think Adnan was convicted on flimsy evidence, I suggest watching a few episodes of The First 48.
 
The article is an advocate's piece by Rabia.

I thought that it was pretty conclusively shown that the day that Asia said that she saw Jay couldn't have been the day of the murder because it didn't snow that night -- Asia remembers being snowed in with her boyfriend the night she saw Jay.

I also believe that Adnan specifically said that he was not at the library that day. As a result, Gutierrez probably didn't want to put Asia on the stand because 1) she would have been lying or 2) the prosecutor could have used Adnan's police statements to challenge her statements, which could have then forced Gutierrez to put Adnan on the stand.
 
According to Serial:
• The library is across the parking lot from the school, considered part of the school campus, so Anan's statement that he was on campus the whole afternoon is consistent, and
• there was a big ice storm that night which led to several snow days after.

Seems to me that the attorney's failure to even SPEAK to Asia, who could provide an alibi, was malpractice at the very least.
 
A lawyer's decision to ignore a lead is not necessarily ineffective counsel. That was the basis of the previous ruling.
The woman is not alive to explain why she didn't pursue the library angle and interview Asia; however, it is a big leap to assume the root is ineptitude rather than a strategic or tactical choice.
