Responsibilities
The senior editor assigns and edits various short and long-form articles, contributes to the conception, assignment, and line editing of theme issue packages and of front-of-the-book conceits. The editor should excel in ideation, conceiving of and doing preliminary research for theme issues and story ideas as well as regularly monitoring, collecting and distributing to the editing staff compelling conceits from other publications and ideas. The editor should also recognize the value of social media platforms for content distribution. This is a management position, requiring communicating regularly with other senior editors, top editors, writers and contributors; fostering relationships with new writers; distributing first drafts of features to top edit staff and gathering editorial comments and directives; and sending out editorial requests for photography as well as travel/payment requests for staff and freelance writers. The senior editor also may be asked to work on The Magazine’s various digital platforms
Basic Qualifications
• At least 10 years of editorial and reporting experience.
• Advanced competence in writing, editing and reporting.
• Advanced news journalism experience and news judgment; understands assigned sport from a journalistic point of view, but is not locked into the newspaper tradition.
• Digital experience preferred such as website or iPad project management.
• Advanced appreciation of popular culture and contributes to an understanding of the tastes of ESPN's audiences.
• Has familiarity with most major Internet search engines and fluency in electronic newsgathering techniques, including quickly navigating the Internet.
• Strong ability to work efficiently under deadline pressures.
• Strong understanding of some or all major sports, as well as a working knowledge of athletes, coaches, league operations and the like.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience managing writers, editors or an editorial department at a national periodical.
Preferred Education
Bachelors’ degree or higher in journalism, communications or a related field.
