I suppose I understand the Title IX reasons for cutting men's swimming and/or diving while keeping the women's teams. But if you still have to keep a competition-level pool open, go through the expenses of hosting meets, etc., you're not really saving any money. May as well keep both men's and women's swimming -- or cut both.

A few years back, Eastern Michigan dropped its successful men's swimming program, but kept its less-successful women's program. Several MAC schools had dropped men's swimming, which I'm sure was behind the logic.

Still, EMU has a million-gallon, Olympic-sized indoor pool (complete with a 10-meter platform), plus the indoor six-lane, 25-yard pool that was used before the big pool opened in the early '80s (walking distance from each other on the main campus). A couple summers ago, the big pool was damaged in a storm, so the university spent big bucks to repair it, even though it only has one swim team. High school and club teams use it, though. Still ...

I’d think tennis is too fancy a sport for any SEC school nowadays. Most of the kids around here who play tennis are the children of the elites, and I thought they hated the elites in all those red states.

Not enough. Depending on what their institutional spending policy is, they’ll need ~ $50,000,000 or more to endow those teams. That ain’t happening.
