A quick and silly question for San Francisco/Bay Area SJ.comers:

Is the print edition of the San Francisco Chronicle sports section really green? Because my daughter moved there a month-and-a-half ago, I picked up an online subscription (six months for 99 cents!!) and will occasionally skim through the e-Edition. And the cover of the sports section is "sporting green," at least online.

Reminds me of the former "Big Peach" Sunday sports cover of the Des Moines Register!

The Milwaukee Journal Green Sheet ... but that was for comics and features.

Oh the Chron used to print the entire section on green newsprint. And the Sunday Entertainment was the "Pink Section" for similar reasons.

As an economy move, they went to green screens on the front to keep the tradition alive. Not sure which story to believe, that green newsprint was getting too expensive or the presses in San Francisco couldn't handle it. But I have heard that when they moved printing to a plant in Hayward that could handle green newsprint, grown men cried as the new Green rolled off the presses. They stopped rack sales in this area a year or so ago, but I think they're back to green screens.

Of course, when both the Chronicle and Examiner were operating under a JOA (before Hearst bought out the De Youngs), the Ex had a rack card, "Examiner sports pages make other papers turn green with envy."

I believe it is, but can't say for sure.

And that 99-cent deal is one of the best in the biz. I'm sure the Chronicle will be fine as long as millions of people pay it!
FYI, I see the Seattle Times has a similar offer: Six months of online access for $1. I guess these newspaper websites are falling into the old ways of getting print subscribers.

Churn baby churn …

Any Bay Area types give the San Francisco Standard a read? Former Chron beat guy John Shea and Tim Kawakami are writing for them now.
