Maybe you just go in and tell your boss you're not interested in this other job.
What is the problem with that?

You mean for a position at the current paper (because you like the position you're in now) or at another paper?
 
Just tell him or her: Listen, you may have heard a rumor about this other job ... but it's not true. I'm happy here.
 
I'm not addressing rumors about Michigan. If anyone asks another question about that, this thread is over.
 
If Kirk Herbstreit is reporting it, it must be true. Perhaps you really ARE interested.
 
Do your bosses know about this rumor? Have they asked you about it? How did they find out about it?
