RIP Jimmy Buffett

Savannah has been really active on Radio Margaritaville and the Coral Reefer concert dates. So I wonder if she wants to keep the train rolling while the others want to cash out.
I honestly don't know how all the licensing stuff works. Buffett obviously didn't own all the stuff that has Margaritaville slapped on it. Wasn't it reported he was worth close to a billion or at least several hundred million. Seems to me there is plenty to go around while keeping the party going.

A Florida appeals court has been asked to weigh in on the battle for control of the estate of the late "Margaritaville" singer and Palm Beach homeowner Jimmy Buffett — valued at an estimated $275 million.
Attorneys for Buffett's widow, Jane, on Feb. 26 asked the Fourth District Court of Appeals in West Palm Beach to review a Palm Beach County Circuit Court judge's order that allowed Jimmy Buffett's longtime financial adviser Richard Mozenter to continue to pay his court fees using money from a marital trust.

Mozenter had spent $2 million from the trust on the legal action as of February, Jane Buffett's attorneys alleged in court.

To be Devil's Advocate, why doesn't the trustee guy wash his hands of the deal unless he's soaking it for money? Why would he want the hassle? Jimmy is long since dead, and there is no disputing the money belongs to the family. He has nothing to gain by staying involved except access to $275 million.

I should ask my brother-in-law, this is his bread and butter. Don't know if "the trust" is considered the client, and its their obligation and duty to represent the wishes of the deceased or what. And there might be some "disagreement" about things. Maybe the daughter wants to "keep the party going" and keep Margaritaville Inc. going to keep Jimmy alive in some way, while the trust calls for a cashout. It's easier to keep the party going if certain assets remain in place than cashing out and starting from scratch.

It's so sad that it's come to this. Really. It sounds like there's some squabbles within the family. I don't understand why Jimmy didn't lay it all out in a will. It's like when Prince died. He was so careful with his music vault when he was alive and he went to great lengths to win back the rights to his own music. And then he died without a will. I mean come on rich people, make this easy for your family. Do the work.

And Jimmy had been sick for some time. I know they kept it quiet but there were some cancellations and what not in there that made me think something was going on.

Not sure of the laws in Florida, but we recently set up a trust. Our attorney said it's much more effective than a will at making sure everything is done exactly as you want it done - without going through probate. We have contingencies in it for if both my wife and I die and our daughter is younger than 25 or younger than 30 or if one of us dies and the other is incapacitated or if all three of us die. It was a depressing conversation but it made my wife and I realize we need to get serious about writing down information and passwords and putting them in the safe - just in case.

Yes, and we need to set up our trust. I have friends that have trust. But Jimmy had a trust so I'm not sure why it's devolved to this.

A death in the family so often brings out the worst in people. Someone slips in and grabs grandma's good jewelry or granddad's guns, or things where their intent was clearly stated in their will get overridden in the aftermath - and I'm talking about normal families with ordinary things being disputed. Add a multi-million dollar estate to the mix and it gets really bad.

My brother-in-law is a probate attorney and deals with this stuff all the time. He says the attorneys/executors/trustees generally have a "free year" to get things moving before the courts start putting pressure on them to move things along with regard to settling an estate/dispersing a trust. Their "client" isn't necessarily the family involved, but to the trust itself and to get maximum value for it. Look how long it has taken Jody Allen to unload the Blazers and Seahawks. It's the same thing, but her brother had no other heirs to complain about the pace. The only ones who might be quibbling, would be the charitable organizations who stand to gain from the sale of the the franchises and I'm sure they don't want to get on her bad side so they stay quiet.

He was only surpassed by Utley in time with the band. Buffett always introduced him as "King of the World." RIP.
Saw a video of a new doc about Buffett where they mentioned producer Norbert Putnam was the guy who said they should add some indigenous instruments to lend the music credibility. The rest is history.

RIP

Was just thinking about this thread because I've started re-listening to A Pirate Looks at 50 read by Don Johnson on Spotify.

I just reread Where Is Joe Merchant for the first time in probably 35 years. Still a very entertaining book.
Wish they'd do an audio book.
At one time, there was talk of a movie, but that's been many moons ago.
