RIP Jane Goodall

Once upon a time intellectual curiosity for its own sake was celebrated and not seen as a threat or an impediment to moving an extra 10,000 widgets by the end of the quarter. Seems sadly fitting she checks out the same day as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

RIP

Hers was the epitome of a life well-lived.

A lot of people have their causes that they support, and things that are important to them. But usually, that just means donating -- throwing money -- at them. She went out and did the work -- with passion, compassion, care and resolute determination to do her part to, quite literally, save the world, for us, and everything in it.

And she did her best to spread her messages and her purposes, which should be everyone's.

There's a quote of hers that's been going around the past couple days that is so appropriate, so heart-breaking and so true:

"While we're the most intellectual animals ever to walk the planet, we're not intelligent. Because intelligent creatures don't destroy their only home."

And here's another, put more bluntly: "Humans are not exempt from extinction."

Such a giant of conservation, anthropology and humanity. Her outlook and drive and purpose in life were unequaled, in my opinion. I admire and respect her so much. She made it so that, yes, she will be missed. Truly.

RIP

One last thing: I have to share something from years ago that involved an interview and story I did once on two high school tennis players -- a successful doubles team that was in the mix during end-of-season section championships.

They were very good tennis players but even more outstanding as students, something pretty common in tennis, I found.

Anyway, this pair spent an extended time -- two weeks if remember correctly -- attending and participating in work in the Jane Goodall Institute's Roots and Shoots program specifically intended to inspire and expose young people to the importance of conservation, environmentalism, and science.

I remember being envious of those tennis players as they talked about their experiences meeting and working with Goodall! And apparently, I had good reason.

Granted, they were only 17 at the time, but one of them said, unequivocally, "It was the best thing I've ever done in my life. Just, amazing."
