Really saddened by this one. I love "The Rockford Files," and my wife and I have been watching it on DVD lately. Terrific actor.

Sad to hear. I grew up watching "Rockford," and it's mainly what I remember him for, but he did so much more in his career, and if he may have been in some forgettable movies and shows, he would be great in them regardless. RIP.

My dad was within a couple years of Garner's age, and "Rockford" was his all-time favorite show. And it became one of mine.

I also loved his understated job in "Murphy's Romance," where he played a 60ish widower who more or less falls into an unexpected romance with mid-30s Sally Field (one of her best roles, too), and it completely works.

The Jim-Rocky relationship in "Rockford Files" was one of the best father-son dynamics on any teevee series -- ironic because Garner himself had very poor relations with his parents.

He was great in Maverick, both the movie & TV show.

And Tank is an underrated movie.

Maverick is one of the few TV Westerns I like, and it is greatness. Back in the dark ages when I covered Friday night football, it would come on at 2 a.m. and I would watch it religiously. Now it's on one of those old TV channels on Saturday nights and I still love it.

As Bret's old pappy used to say, "A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies but one." And a thousand to one is pretty good odds.
