The sounds of the 1 PM window on NBC. Charlie Jones and Merlin Olsen were the get-your-homework-done sounds of the 4 PM window.
One of my favorite things about this board is that, despite our varied levels of education and work experience, so many of us have had a shared experience. I hear Charlie Jones voice and I'm in the game room of our old house in White Oak, Pa. on a Sunday, and its gray and miserable out as the sun fades (on the rare days that western Pennsylvania HAD sun) and I'm watching Jones live Jack Murphy Stadium where its sunny and everyone is in shirtsleeves.

Jones also called MLB games. Was the Reds' radio voice in 1973 and 1974. Called Aaron's 714th HR.

Completely this. And how the mind captures certain experiences even though they may not perfectly reflect reality, e.g. Don Criqui’s voice, I associate with Bengals or Browns games, Jones’ voice is connected to the AFC West, and **** Stockton — for so long the No. 2 or 3 at CBS and Fox — I tether with Vikings games, because it seemed for a long while like they always slid in with the backup crew, but never the low-end crews.

Criqui also had a late-career stage calling myriad Browns games for CBS when they were atrocious and he was on their No. 7/8 team. I believe he called NFL games on network TV for 47 consecutive years, although in the final years he had only spot duty. Possibly the only person who called a game involving Vince Lombardi and later called one featuring Gronk.

Anyway, sorry for the Criquijack.

Late in his broadcasting career, Mr. Trumpy was screwed by Westwood One. That comment came from Joel Meyers before a college football game.
RIP, Mr. Trumpy. You were so good.
